Provincial Spoon? R? Thistle

Post by jmaps23 »

Hi. another spoon that was in a lot of Scottish Provincial spoons, appears to be marked RR or RB. the closest match I've found is Robert Robertson of Cupar, but the style of spoon suggest this is too early for his work. appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

Hi,

I think whoever made the punch has attempted to produce two distinctly different letters, so perhaps RB, or BR.

Dating by style can be a minefield with provincial spoons, sometimes fashion took many years to reach certain parts, or maybe the spoon was made to match an existing set. Of course there is always the possibility of colonial origin, Scottish smiths were scattered all over the world.

Hi Trev.

Thanks for your reply on both my posts, I'm certain your are correct with the Colin Robertson attributation , the makers punch appears identical. As to this one i guess i will continue the hunt..i do think you are right , the lettering appears to be different, i will look into colonial marks. Thanks again . James
