NATHANIEL UNDERWOOD

'NU' beneath a crown, noted struck twice on a 3 1/4" (8.5cm) salt shovel.

This is likely to be the mark of Nathaniel Underwood which may have been recorded in the missing smallworkers register 1739-1758.

Arthur Grimwade noted that Underwood resigned from the livery in May 1740, this may have been because he could no longer afford it, or perhaps he retired at that date, if the later, then as the missing register was started in the summer of 1739, then the mark may only have been in use for about a year.
