How to choose forum to post in?

I know this may sound like a dumb question, but how do you determine which forum to post your question in? Because I am unable to identify my hallmark, I have no way of knowing which forum I should choose. Most people are here because they can't identify their hallmark and hence don't know if it's British, European, American, etc. So this must be a common problem, but there is no mention of it in the posting instructions. Just post in the most likely candidate, and if necessary one of the mods will move it to somewhere more suitable.
