EATON, James (Grimwade p.393)

Post by buckler »

An advert in The World dated 9th April 1790 for glue and patent medicines by Mary Crew reads
" to be had of herself, at Mr Eatons, Silver Buckle Maker, No 3 Salisbury Court , the fifth door at the right hand side from Fleet Street, her name under the bell "
Whether this refers to Robert or James Eaton is uncertain. However as James registered his first mark with John Sleap at that address the next day (10th April 1790 ) it seems more likely to be him .

Bucklemaker Eatons appear to have been common in Salisbury Court in the 1790’s - see:

10 April 1790
Joint Bucklemakers mark of James EATON & John SLEAP at 3, Salisbury Court, Fleet Street

19 July 1793
Sole buckle maker mark of James EATON registered at 2, Salisbury Court , Fleet Street. It was originally presumed that this indicated the dissolution of the partnership. And whether Sleap remained at 3, Salisbury Court was unknown as no further marks are known to have been registered to him alone

However a recently acquired shoe buckle with "u" date letter for 1795/96 and the JE / JS mark gives a problem to the theory that the partnership was dissolved around 1793. Either James had a separate mark for an additional solely operated business at 2, Salisbury Court , with the older partnership with Sleap still operating at No 3, or James was still using old punches after Sleap's departure.
