MOSLEY, Richard (Grimwade p.377, 602)

Post by MCB »

He married Mary Wyatt (born 1776) at St Andrew, Holborn in 1795; both were of that parish.
The christening record of daughter Hannah at the same church in 1798 shows her parents’ address as Charles Street.
The christening record of son William at the same church in 1801 shows his parents’ address was Castle Street.
His wife Mary’s burial record dated in 1805 is at the same church and gives her last address as previously noted.
The christening record for a son Richard at the same church in 1807 shows his mother’s name as Nancy and his parents’ address as Castle Street. The christening record for another son Cornelius at the same church in 1812 shows his mother’s name as Nancy Arabella and for a daughter Arabella at the same church in 1814 her parents’ address as previously.
Indentures were signed in 1814 for Robert the son of Robert Fenn, butcher of Gray’s Inn Lane to be his apprentice. He is recorded as a jeweller of Castle Street
He entered maker’s marks at Goldsmiths Hall 1823-25 as a goldworker at 39 Castle Street.
The burial of his wife Nancy in 1826 aged 52 years is recorded at St Andrews, her last address as previously.
His burial is recorded in 1827 aged 54 years at the same church and from the same last address.
The smallworkers mark registered at Goldsmiths Hall in 1835 by Richard Mosley of 8 Hatton Garden will not relate to the same man who died in 1827.
There are at least two possibilities for who entered the 1835 maker’s mark:
Richard Mosley born 1802 the son of Robert Mosley. The last address for him aged 46 years shown by his burial recorded in the St Andrew, Holborn register in 1848 was Hatton Garden.
Richard Mosley born in 1807 the son of Richard Mosley referred to above. In connection with his Will the National Probate Calendar for the Principal Registry records he died in 1867 “formerly of 8 Hatton Garden and Cupola House Hackney Road and late of Compton Street”.
A Trade Directory of 1843 has an entry for Richard Mosley & Co, steel pen manufacturers and Birmingham & Sheffield warehousemen of 8 Hatton Garden. The 1851 Post Office Directory has an entry for the company at the same address where they were merchants and manufacturers of pens, pencil cases etc and the 1856 Post Office Directory an entry for the company as merchants & manufacturers of gold pens, pencil cases etc at 7 Hatton Garden.

An example of the retailer's mark of W. Mosley, this one is taken from a dessert spoon made by Laurence Keary (Kearny) in 1826.
