SPILSBURY, Francis II (Grimwade p.667-8, 767)

Post by MCB »

A christening of Francis, son of Francis (Grimwade p.667, 767) and Sarah Spilsbury, recorded in 1736 at St Anne and St Agnes appears relevant.
The duties paid in 1763 by Francis Spilsbury, Citizen and Goldsmith for the apprentice indentures of William Noak may relate to either Francis Spilsbury.
There are christenings recorded at St Anne and St Agnes in 1763-70 for children of Francis and Dorothy Spilsbury.
Extract from the 1773 Parliamentary Report which may relate to either Francis Spilsbury I or II:
Mr. F. Spilsbury, a London silversmith, also states that he had on several occasions been at Goldsmith's Hall to treat the workmen with drink; and thought it of consequence to be on good terms with the scrapers, as they had the power of showing favour in passing work; for when his plate had been objected to, he had known those difficulties removed by giving liquor at the Hall.
In 1779 as a widower of Lambeth he married spinster Dorothy Evans at St George the Martyr, Holborn.
Their son Edgar Ashe was christened at St Mary, Lambeth in 1780.
Trade Directory entries 1779-83 show him as a chemist at Mount Row, Lambeth and in the same trade 1783-91 at Soho Square, Westminster.
His burial was recorded at St Giles, Camberwell in 1793.
