MINCE, Jonah (Grimwade p.305, 340)

Post by MCB »

He is shown in records as either Jonas or Jonah Mince.
He entered maker’s mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1767 from George Yard, Whitechapel and in 1778 from 8 Norman Street, Old Street Road as a watch case maker.
He married Sarah Pohmar at St Anne, Soho in 1770.
Christening records for three sons, Charles (Grimwade p.291) in 1771, Francis in 1773 and Jeremiah Jonas (Grimwade p.291, 305) in 1784 at St Luke, Finsbury show their father as a watch case maker.
He entered further maker’s marks in 1793 and 1800 as a case maker from 8 Norman Street.
He paid duties in 1794 as a watch case maker of Old Street for the Apprentice Indentures of Charles Hubbard (Grimwade p.291).
There is a reference to him in connection with property in Cow Street and Cow Cross in the 1802 London Poll Book which show he was still living at Norman Street, Old Street Road.
There was a burial recorded at St Luke’s, in 1809 of a John Mince aged 66 years, late of Norman Street, which may be relevant as the address is the same as that of Jonas Mince.
