GINES, George (Grimwade p523)

Post by buckler »

Son of Richard Gines of Compton, Wiltshire, farmer .

From a period from which very few buckles have survived I have two separate examples of his mark on buckles. Neither have assay marks ! This does not prove he was a specialist bucklemaker, but it is not impossible !

5 July 1697
Apprenticed to his elder brother Richard Gines, Merchant Taylor and who had marks registered, initially as a smallworker, then as largeworker. George free of the Merchant Taylors in 1712

14 December 1715
Mark ( Brittania Standard ) entered as smallworker in Lombard Street
[His brothers first mark , in 1698 was in Fenchurch Street , but his second, as largeworker was at Lombard Street in 1714. Heal records Richard as Richard Gaynes as a silversmith Rose and Crown, corner of Nag's Head Court( or corner of Ball Alley) Lombard Street 1698 until his death in 1742.
Richard's will was proved 8 June 1742 as PROB 11/718/483 as Will of Richard Gines, Goldsmith of Lombard Street , City of London.]

c1720
Sterling mark (undated) as smallworker , probably on the re-intoduction of the Sterling Standard

Heal records him as goldsmith at Ship and Crown, Gracechurch Street 1721 -1744, Gines & Pewtress goldsmiths ,Gracechurch Street 1748 and also indicates he may have become a banker with a William Gines [and perhap Richard] at Rose and Crown, 50 Lombard Street 1751 - 1768 . The same address was used 1770 - 1781 by Gines and Atkinson

12 April 1751
Probate of the Will of George Gines, Merchant Tailor of London (PROB 11/787/104).
Will dated 20 November 1751. Witnessed by George Baskerville [ perhaps the silversmith] and Charles Rogers . Proved by the sole appointed executor his daughter Ann Wells, the wife of John Wells.
No mention of wife, so presumed to be a widower.

Legacies to
Grandaughter Mary Dean, Spinster
Grandson Thomas Dean
Grandson George Dean
Granddaughter Ann Dean
(all legacies to be invested in South Sea Annuities "in the name of my son-in-law John Wells and my daughter Ann Wells his wife " and transfer to the legatees when they each severally reach the age of 21.)
Residue to
"My two daughters Mary Dean , wife of Thomas Dean and the said Ann Wells equally to be divided between them, share and share alike

7 January 1756
PROB 11/820/89 the Will of Emm Gines, Widow of Saint Leonard Shoreditch, is likely to that of the widow of his brother Richard as there is a trade card of E Grimes & Co , Goldsmith and Jewellers Rose and Crown, corner of Ball Alley Lombard Street in the British Museum Collection .
23 November 1757
Ordinary's Account, . Old Bailey Reference Number: OA17571123

"It was this accomplice who, he said, received £38. 5s. at mess. [Messrs ] Gines in Lombard street on a bill taken out of the Liverpool bag about September last. . . "

Further details, including the Pewtress connection, from contemporay newspapers

4 October 1742
Daily Advertising carries an advert for a lost gold watch, reward offered by "Mr George Gines, Goldsmith , at the Ship and Crown, the corner of Nag's- Head - Court, Gracechurch -Street."

6 April 1751
Read's Weekly Journal or British Gazetteer reports
" Wednesday died, aged 67, Mr George Gines an eminent and wealthy Goldsmith in Gracechurch Street" So probable date of death 3 April 1751

16 April 1751
Advertisement in the General Advertiser
"Thomas Pewtress, Goldsmith and Jeweller, the corner of Nag's- Head- Court Gracechurch - Street, takes this Method of acquainting his Friends and Customers, that he shall continue to carry on the same Business as in the Time of his Father-in Law and Partner, Mr George Gines, deceased, where he hops for a Continuance of their Favours" .

Pewtress had obviously married a daughter of Gine who is not mentioned in the will !

29 December 1767
London Evening Post reports that [a later] George Gines, Banker of Lombard Street died in December 1769 in Bath where he had gone to recover from a "lingering illness" .
His widow , Mrs Gines of St Brides Passage remarried in 1769.
The address of the widow tends to indicate that this George may have been another son not mentioned in the will.

I am intrigued that George Gines has two buckles to his name. His brother Richard seems to have been the more successful silversmith, and I have the impression that George (my 6x gt grandfather) was latterly in banking, though ironically it was Richard who had a Lombard Street address. The second George Gines and William Gines, recorded as bankers in the eighteenth century, are both sons of Richard; George son of George (apprenticed to his father in 1732) died in 1741(buried St Benet Gracechurch). George's daughter Hannah m. Thomas Pewtress in 1747, but died in 1748. The identity of George's wife is a frustrating mystery to me.

This may not actually apply here and already be well known, but there is a record in the London, England, Freedom of the City Admission Papers for George Guines son of Richard Guines Merchant Taylor for his freedom in the company of Merchant Taylors by Patrimony in 1739 . Richard's year of admission is given as 6 April 1698. No other location, family information or dates are given. The witnesses' names look like Edmund Cooper bower, Gat. Heath goldsmith, Thomas Masen goldsmith, Joseph Dyer merchant taylor, John Newton goldsmith, and Jonathan Bonnet scrivener.

Also to be taken with a grain of salt is an alternative for the location Compton, Wiltshire County. Going by George Gines difficult to read indenture contract, his father may have been from Chesterton, Wiltshire County.

I can assure Silverly that George Gines son of Richard yeoman and brother of Richard silversmith was born in Compton, Wiltshire, England. His baptism is in the register for the parish of Enford, of which Compton is a hamlet. In addition to Richard's and George's apprenticeships with the Merchant Taylors, a third son Thomas was apprenticed to the Haberdashers on 30th June 1693.

I have to confess that I was way off track with my last post. The indenture certificate I referred to was dated 1699 and concerned George the son of Richard Gines who was apprenticed to London Merchant Taylor Richard Gines. George's father was a yeoman and this was his location:

There was a family connection between George Gines and Thomas Deane (see http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic ... 74&t=52145). George Gines' will of 1749 (proved 1751) gives a Thomas Dean as grandson.

A Non -conformist record of an adult baptism of a George Gines Stibbs in 1768 gives the parents as Christopher Stibbs and Mary, daughter of Thomas and Mary Dean confirming the identity of this Thomas .
