BLADES, John (Grimwade p.442)

Post by MCB »

He is listed in Trade Directories at 5 Ludgate Hill from 1781 to 1790 as a glass and earthen ware manufacturer and from 1786 as glass manufacturer to His Majesty.
In 1784 Perkin, son of Perkin Blades, a shoemaker from County Durham, was indentured as apprentice to John Blades of the Glass Sellers Company. Also apprenticed to him were Francis Jones of Farnborough in 1795 and Samuel Gouge of London in 1802.
He entered marks at Goldsmiths Hall in 1812 and 1827 as a small worker from 5 Ludgate Place, presumably in respect of silver ornamentation to his glass and earthenware.
He was assessed to Land Tax on property in Ludgate Hill until 1829.
In view of the proximity of St Bride, Fleet Street to Ludgate Hill and the last of the Land Tax assessments on him being in 1829 the burial of a John Blades at that church aged 78 years in 1829 but late of Brixton is probably relevant.
