CLARE, Joseph II (Grimwade p.465)

Post by MCB »

He was assessed to Land Tax on property in Christopher Court, Aldersgate to 1758 and on adjoining properties in Dean’s Court, Aldersgate from 1759-1770 where his neighbour was Benjamin Gignac (Grimwade p.522, 749).
He paid Duty for the apprentice indentures of Thomas Smith in 1760 as a silversmith from St Martin le Grand parish.
He died in 1770-1. The Widow Clare was assessed to Land Tax on part of the Dean’s Court property from 1771, the other part being occupied by a new tenant.

1750 Jan-Aug Joseph son of Joseph Clare London Goldsmith free by patrimony. The elder Joseph's freedom date from the books was 4 November 1712. The paper also has the year 1732 below 1712 which although not specified seems to ordinarily apply to the birth year of the person being made free (the paper appears to have been spindled at what looks like the two in 32). In this case I believe the second year given, 1732, applies to the year that the younger Joseph's apprenticeship began. Jeremiah Marlowe Goldsmith was among the guild members that signed for this admission.
