GARBETT, John (Grimwade p.518)

Post by MCB »

A John Garbett was buried at St Michael, Wood Street in 1737. The burial record shows no age at death.
Sampson Bennett, son of a Falmouth goldsmith of the same name, signed in 1738 to be Garbett’s apprentice. He was immediately turned over to John Saffery of the Haberdashers Company.
He paid Duty as a freeman of the Goldsmiths Company in 1740 for the apprentice indentures of Thomas Murrall of London.
With James Pell, with whom he had entered a mark in partnership at Foster Lane in 1726, he was listed in Land Tax assessments on unidentified property in St Michael, Wood Street precinct from 1729-46. Prior to 1729 the name assessed is different to Pell but otherwise unreadable; Pell was assessed on the property in 1747 and it was empty in 1748. From this and the following detail it appears that Pell and Garbett moved from Foster Lane to the Wood Street precinct sometime between 1726 and 1729 but failed to notify Goldsmiths’ Hall. It is also possible that the John Garbett who died in 1737 was a goldsmith and a son of the same name continued the partnership with Pell.
The Will of John Garbett, goldsmith late of Wood Street, was proved for probate on 28th April 1747 (National Archives reference PROB 11/753/545). Heal noted him at the Crown & Anchor, Lombard Street and deceased in 1747 but the unusual surname , the “goldsmith” reference and the address suggests the Will is probably relevant. No other references to Garbett at Lombard Street have been found.
The only burial of a John Garbett which has been found recorded near London in 1747 was at St Mary, Hendon also in April of that year.

1 October 1728 John Garbett of Saint Michael's Wood Street married Harriet Eddows of Saint George's Hannover Square at Saint John The Baptist Clerkenwell Islington. Harriet was the name given for John Garbett's wife in his 1747 proved will. She was his Executrix.
