CHALDECOTT, Thomas (Grimwade p.719)

Details of a token issued by Thomas Chaldecott in 1794:

Portsmouth

No. 51-.

Obverse.—Male bust (of John Howard) in old-fashioned costume, to left.

Legend.— “ John Howard, F.R.S., Philanthropist.”

Reverse.—Arms of the town of Portsmouth (Azure, a crescent or, surmounted by an etoile of eight points, of the last), over a castle, triple-towered, bearing on the front a shield of the arms of the city of Chichester, in Sussex (Argent, guttée de poix, on a chief indented gules, a lion passant, gurdent or +) in the field.

Legends.—Outer legend, “ Portsmouth and Chichester." Inner legend, " Half Penny," divided by the etoile. Date, in exergue, “ 1794."

Border.-Ribbed.

Edge.-—“ Payable at Sharps Portsmouth and Chaldecotts Chichester."

Notes.—-Artist, probably Wyon, but uncertain ; manufacturer, Kempson ; issuers, Messrs. Sharp, of Portsmouth, and Chaldecott, of Chichester, Sussex.

Design and Execution.—Good.

Rarity-Common.

General.-This token is almost identical with one struck by Hancock for the same issuers ; the difference being that in this one the legend reads " Portsmouth and Chichester," and in the other “ Chichester and Portsmouth.” It is, therefore, rather difficult to arrange them, but it has been thought better to take the former under Portsmouth, and the latter will come in under Chichester; the probability being that this one was issued by Sharp and the other by Chaldecott, though they redeemed them indiscriminately. Thomas Sharp, the issuer at Portsmouth carried on business in that town as a mercer, while T. Chaldecott, of Chichester, was a silversmith and cutler in that city, and a freeholder of the county; and, probably from their having tokens struck in common, they were relatives; otherwise they must have been particular friends.
