Vienna Silversmith and MS

Post by silverfan »

On Sept 03, 2012 I already posted this mark under the headline "Vienna Silversmith?" (see first photo) and Theoderich attributed it (helmet?) to Klinkosch. With that mark now I found another Jugendstil-Pattern which does not appear in the Klinkosch catalogue. So Bahner and I doubt if it is the knight's helmet of Klinkosch.
For which maker stands this mark and who is MS?

Hi,
I think this is the post referring to Klinkosch and Stern.

Two identical helmet marks used by two silversmiths in Vienna, not very likely. Retailers.

Hi AG2012,
so you think MS is the maker and the helmet marks belong to a retailer?

Hi,
I have no references in regard of retailing business and trade between Vienna silversmiths, so we can only speculate.
Sometimes we depend on logic, like in this case:

Far more likely a firm from Budapest would have retailed Wilkens of Bremen than vice versa.
If the same logic is applied to your spoons, Klinkosch was far more famous and had huge production, so it`s more likely his silver was retailed by other Vienna silversmiths in their shops. But again, it`s only an assumption.
