Angel Cruet (GV)?

Post by Aguest »

Is there enough detail to make suggestions about possible origins?

Hi Aguest,

There appears to be another mark on the cross-bar?

I think I'm on the trail, the GV mark is for "Giuseppe Veroni" and he was an Italian assay master... So Close!!!!

Kingdom of Sardinia 1814-1825 is basically where we should concentrate ::: Modern day Italy :::

Misspelled it, the assay master of Torino was GIUSEPPE VERNONI who was working in Torino, Kingdom of Sardinia, during the dates 1814-1824 when this cruet set was hallmarked, it contains the large article stamp (which might have either an "11" Denari fineness which indicates 916, or it might have a "12" Denari fineness which indicates 950, but it is difficult to determine the number next to the shield hallmark), and the stylized "T" is most likely a regional hallmark for "Torino" although this is just a guess at this point because of the relative rarity of the piece, difficult to find another piece with these hallmarks :::

To be precise the number can be only 11 that indicates the "bontà" of 11/12 ie 0.917. It can not be 12 that would indicate 12/12 ie 100%.
The T is a mark used since 1824 on already hallmarked objects that came again on the market.
