Primitive? No Marks

Post by modemgirlz »

Hello,
I have this very old, looks to be primitive piece of silver, perhaps to attach to something or wear around your neck. I have always thought it was brass or some other material, until I decided to try to polish it and discovered it was silver. It seems to be made by hand, inside it's packed with hardened dirt/clay to keep it's shape. the silver is very thin. I realize this is not an ordinary post, ( there are no Marks) but I was wondering if anyone has any idea where this could have came from and how old it could be. I have always thought this piece to be very interesting. Thanks to anyone that may have some suggestions.

Hello, I have the feeling it could be from Thailand or India and marking was not compulsory in these countries. It looks like the statues of gods you find in the bouddhist temples.

Of course, I cannot be very specific.

Myriam, Thank for your reply, I appreciate your help. Would you know how old this could be? Just a guess would be fine with me. Thanks again for your help.

Hello Kristina, I have some pieces which are similar to yours and they are dating around 1890-1900. When the British were occupying, the local aristocraty developped a silversmith activity. So pieces were having an occidental shape but with Buddhist design.

I attach a picture of one of these pieces.

Best Regards
