Hi,

As far as I can see, the initials of the Maker are D.P and 800.
Maybe German ??

__ I get more of a "Belgium" feeling here, with the square cartouche with initials and a tiny symbol above the initials w/ the 800 mark in a square too __

Aguest thanks for your reaction as a contributor.

I wonder if anyone can provide conclusive evidence.
There is plenty of talent on this forum, and certainly those who have expertise

Could someone tell me how old this snuff box can be.
Maybe there is someone who can tell something more about the engraving.

In short, everyone is welcome, and every response is appreciated

Thanks in advance

Hi,
Conclusive evidence would be extremely difficult because there is no distinctive mark to indicate the country of origin.
.800 standard was very common in many European countries.
See here:
http://www.925-1000.com/a_Standards.html

It could be a snuff box but also a pill box (more likely).
Millesimal fineness 800 was not used anywhere in Europe before second half 19th century, or even later.
Nicely hand engraved. All said I would date it late 19th or early 20th century.
Regards

AG2012, Thank you for your contribution, it is very appreciated.

To clarify, it is my imperfection to declare the dimensions and weight incorrectly
The dimensions are 11x8x3.5 cm / 106.1 grams.
That's why a pillbox is impossible

I have now started to pay more attention to the size and see that these are listed as a snuff box as well as a tobacco box on Google (4th quarter of the 19th century and 1st quarter of the 20th century)

Unfortunately I can not change it anymore, but now it's more like a tobacco box / snuffbox.
Thanks again for your clear explanation.

Hopefully there is someone who recognizes the maker's mark

Right, the dimensions and weight indicate tobacco box.
Smoking pipes was more popular than snuff at the time.

Hi Sophie
If you see my post March 4 "small oval box with medevil scene" you will notice that the shape of both boxes are the same ,from what i have seen most of this style (shape seem to be mostly made in Holland ,mine is not marked but the ones that i have seen with marks have been Dutch.I am not saying that this shape was not made also in other countries.

Kind regards Guido.

#Thanks Guido for your response.

It remains difficult if you do not have fixed references, such as the official quality mark of a country.
I have read on this site that Belgium had a period that it was not compulsory to legally approve

In my opinion, this box was made in Germany in terms of quality and maybe exported to Belgium and provided with hallmarks
I keep both options open: Germany and Belgium.
We must have someone in possession of books or know where it is manufactured

In short, everyone is welcome, and every response is appreciated.
Hopefully there is someone who recognizes the mark of the maker

There is a remote possibility of identifying the maker, but in truth, the only accurate description at this point would be "Continental Snuff Box" which would indicate that somewhere on the Continent of Europe, this box was manufactured ::: It really could only be described it as a "Continental Snuff Box, Possibly Of Belgian Origin" just to be safe :::

Hi,

I showed it to someone.
The gilding was remarkable.
I got these photos (DB) from a different perspective.
Maybe this helps

In some European countries snuffing or chewing tobacco was very common! You could do it even in churches or theatres...
