Help with odd and un-identified hallmark
Help with odd and un-identified hallmark
Hello all, these unidentified hallmarks have been doing my head in and I can't find anything on them. Would you have any idea at all? Thank you!
Re: Help with odd and un-identified hallmark
Hi,
Papal states after 1815.
If there is capital letter B between crossed keys it is Bologna, no letter - Rome fineness second standard 889/1000 medium items.

Re: Help with odd and un-identified hallmark
The same legislation 1815: maker`s mark is a rhombus with the initials and registered number between initials (looks like 66 or 99 upside down in your mark).Initials are impossible to decipher.
Re: Help with odd and un-identified hallmark
Hi AG2012, thank you for taking the time to answer!
From what I can tell, there is a little "blob" between and below the crossed keys, and all in a shield (not quite a rhombus). This is vexing, for sure.
And so you think it is Italian and circa 1815? Papal States?

Re: Help with odd and un-identified hallmark
Maker` s mark is within a rhombus, papal hat and crossed keys for silver standard are in the shield.
Not 1815 but after 1815 and until 1870 when Papal State ceased to exist.

Re: Help with odd and un-identified hallmark
Ahhh, I got it - it's a hat! :-)
What's between the crossed keys is a very good question, and not one that will be answered in this world (but perhaps in the next) as it is completely obscured, and sort of a blob...
What do you this is the little hallmark with the numbers? (they almost look like "199G" or "G66V" if you turn the picture upside down...)

Re: Help with odd and un-identified hallmark
Maker`s initials, i.e. one letter on the left, one letter on the right and two digit number between, for example "G66V" as it should be according to 1815 legislation in Papal States

Re: Help with odd and un-identified hallmark
That's brilliant! Thanks ever so much!
Re: Help with odd and un-identified hallmark
AG2012 is right, the initial letter is impossible to decipher, however I found only one mark that contains the number 99 and ends with the letter G. It belongs to Angelo Giannotti.
