Silver Serving Set with Agate Handles-Dutch?

Post by silvercrown »

This is my day for feeling stupid. I have a lovely, silver, serving set with banded agate handles. I see the lion passant; what I think is Minerva's head and then a mark that looks like backwards "K" with three dots. Is it Dutch? If not can anyone point me in the right direction? Again thanks for sharing your knowledge.

The problem with this maker's mark is that it should be to search on the basis of letters numbers or figures very easily.
We're looking at three points and unclear character.
There's something in my mind with the maker's mark of "van Kempen", but am not sure about.
I know I've previously searched.
Maybe Oel recognize it immediately or better.
But I keep looking until I found him.

Thanks again for all the trouble you are taking. The mark is not any clearer on the piece itself. Any idea how old this set is?

No problem at all.

The age? That's a good question.
Try to see if you can find a date letter somewhere. That would be the easiest.
The Lion passant 2 was used from 1814-1953.
And if we find the maker's mark, we are talking about a period that silver smith has worked
But do not worry, with a little patience, we'll get there.

Hi,

The Minerva head or assay office mark, I believe has the regional assay office letter M in its helmet for the city of Schoonhoven. Also the style and prick dot decoration point to Schoonhoven. Next week I have access to my library and perhaps could tell you more.

Best,
Oel.

Oel, thank you again for the information. I don't recall the name of the family whose estate was sold, but obviously they loved Dutch silver. We live in the Amish country of Pennsylvania and there are many Dutch & German families here who have lived in this area for generations. I am finding this information fascinating. I know quite a lot about American silver & also vintage & antique silver jewelry. If I can ever repay the favor, don't hesitate. Meanwhile, I would love it if you could follow up on this with me next week. Until then, stay well.

Regards,
Geri

Hi All,

Your image rotated and cut:

Example master’s mark on snuffbox;

The master’s mark according; Netherlands’Responsibility marks from 1797

Three dots above AK conjoined the master’s mark of; Andries Jzn Graves Kooiman JZ. Registered in Schoonhoven from June 1838 till March 1879, the year he died. During his sickness and after his dead, the master’s mark is used by his widow; Mopman, Klaaske Leverland, who sold the shop at the end of March 1879 to her son; Adrianus Andries Graves Kooiman (1879-1911).

Andries Jzn Graves Kooiman is more known for small boxes: tobacco, snuff, mint boxes including loderein boxes.
