JOHN MALLETT OF ST HELIER, JERSEY.

Some more information from Census records regarding John Mallett mentioned above.
He was born around 1825 the son of John Mallett a watch maker of High Street, Barnstable, Devon and was listed there with his father in 1841.
He was recorded as a watch maker at 5 New Street, St Helier, Jersey in 1851 where he lived with his wife Louisa born in Dorset and a 4 months old daughter who had been born on the island
The 1861 Census listed him as a watch maker employing one man and living at 7 Don Street, St Helier with his wife and four children aged from 1 to 8 years who were also all born in St Helier.
The family had grown by two more children by 1871 when they were living at 41 King Street, St Helier. Both John and his son John H (born around 1853) were watch makers.
He was still in the same trade at 41 King Street in 1881. His son Walter born around 1860 was then also a watch maker. Son John was still watch making, had married Julia who was born in London and they lived at 4 Elizabeth Place, St Helier.
John had died by 1891 when his wife Louisa was listed as a widow and jeweller at 41 King Street. Son John with his wife had rejoined his mother as a watch maker. Walter had married and was a watch maker living at 33 Bath Street.
Louisa had retired to live with a daughter elsewhere in St Helier by 1901and was still there aged 87 years in 1911. John H had remarried and continued as a watch maker at the King Street address where he was still listed in 1911 adding jewellery dealing to his activities. Walter continued watch making and lived at other St Helier addresses being last recorded in 1901.
The 1911 Census is the last on-line.

ALFRED COHU

Guernsey

Alfred Cohu was recorded as a Working Jeweller, Engraver, Watch and Clockmaker, working at Guernsey during the period c.1858 - c.1874.

He may have been the Alfred Cohu who was born at Castel, Guernsey in around 1835, and was still resident at Guernsey (St. Peter Port) in 1901.

EDWARD AUBIN

St. Helier, Jersey

Possibly a retailer only, a 1788 advertisement shows him as an importer of silverwares from England.

He is likely to be the same Edward Aubin, aged 50 years, who was recorded in General Don's Muster list of the Jersey local Militia in 1815 as holding the rank of Serjt Batteries at St.Helier.

EDMUND NICOLLE

7, Beresford Street, St. Helier, Jersey

Recorded as a Watchmaker and Optician in the 1856 and 1868 Jersey Almanacs.

As a side note, Edmund Nicolle's son, Edmund Toulmin Nicolle (1868-1929) was a well-known figure at Jersey, his obituary is recorded below:

MR. E. TOULMIN NICOLLE
Dr. R. R. Marett, Rector of Exeter College, Oxford, who is also President of the Société Jersiaise, writes from Jersey:–
Mr. Edmund Toulmin Nicolle, F.S.A., who died suddenly of a heart attack on August 13, at the age of 61, held the ancient and honourable office of Vicomte in the Island of Jersey, a crown appointment. From 1894 he had been a member of the local as well as the English Bar, and for nearly 18 years before his appointment as Vicomte in 1917 had served prominently among the deputies of the Town of St. Helier's in the Insular States. Apart from his public services, which were much appreciated by his compatriots, he was widely known as an antiquary. So far back as 1893 he edited the revised edition of Ansted and Latham's well-known book on the Channel Islands, and has since been wholly or in part responsible for numerous publications, the most notable of these perhaps being "Mont Orgueil Castle: Its History and Description," Jersey, 1921. In a very real sense, however, he might be said to be behind most of the work, both exploratory and literary, of the Société Jersiaise for the last 20 years. Its Bulletins and occasional publications, the value of which as treasuries of sound material both prehistorics and as regards Norman origins is well recognized by experts, owe most of the inspiration to Nicolle; for not only was his knowledge accurate and wide, but he had a singular gift for organization, and in the capacity of secretary mobilized every scrap of intelligent enthusiasm and not a little of spare money in the island in the interest of archæological discovery and research. The least self-seeking or self-advertising of men, he might have been almost said to revel in anonymity; but his many friends and colleagues–thanks largely to his efforts, there is hardly a representative islander who does not support the Société Jersiaise–fully realize that in his scientific thoroughness wedded to a genius for quiet leadership lay the secret of their united strength; so that they mourn him as one who will not be forgotten and cannot be replaced.

SNOWDON MALZARD

St. Peter, Jersey

BRITISH COLUMBIA

Snowdon Malzard, for a number of years employed in the local Birks store, died recently at St. Peter's, Jersey, Channel Islands. Quite a young man, only about twenty-seven years of age, Snowdon was very popular with his fellow-employees and with the patrons of the Birks store. He went overseas with the 47th Battalion in the early days of the war. Enlisting as a private, he gradually worked himself up to the position of sergeant-major. He was wounded and gased several times, and returned to Vancouver after his discharge. He preferred to live on the other side of the Atlantic, however, and his untimely death came as the result of a severe cold, his splendid constitution having become undermined by the stress and strain of the battle front.

Although not part of the Channel Islands silver trade, the above detail is worth recording. Snowdon Malzard was born on the 28th November 1888 to Gordon and Rebecca Malzard of Prospect House, Mont Fallu, St Peter, Jersey. He was recorded in the Jersey Censuses for 1891 and 1901, before leaving for Canada in 1905.

An excellent account of the life of Snowdon Malzard can be found here: http://www.greatwarci.net/journals/51.pdf
