NOTICE is hereby given, in pursuance of section 195 (2) of the Companies (Consolidation) Act, 1908, that a General Meeting of the above named Company will be held at 24, The Strand, Derby, on Thursday, the 16th day of March, 1922, at 6.30 o'clock, for the purpose of having laid before it an account, showing the manner in which the winding up has been conducted and the property of the Company disposed of, and of hearing any explanation which may be given by the Liquidator; and also of determining, by Extraordinary Resolution, the manner in which the books of the Company, and of the Liquidator, shall be disposed of. Dated the 8th day of February, 1922.

As WILLIAM HENRY NEWMAN, a mark 'WHN' contained within three circles, the centre one being larger than the outer two, was entered with the Chester Assay Office on the 3rd February 1903. The address recorded was Sandpits, Birmingham.

As W.H. NEWMAN Ltd., a similar mark to the above was entered with the Chester Assay Office on the 13th March 1903. The address recorded was Sandpits, Birmingham.

CHARLES CROP DECEASED

Pursuant the Statute 22 and 23 Vict., cap. 35, intituled " An Act to further amend the Law of Property, and to relieve Trustees."

NOTICE is hereby given, that all creditors and persons having any claims or demands against the estate of Charles Crop, late of Brooksby's Works, Brooksby's Walk, Homerton, and of the Lowdens, Edmonton, both in the county of Middlesex, Tobacco Pipe Manufacturer (who died on the 15th day of January, 1883, at the Lowdens, Edmonton aforesaid, and whose will was proved in the Principal Registry of the Probate Division of the High Court of Justice on the 5th day of March, I883, by Charles Crop and John Crop, both of Brooksby's Works, Brooksby's Walk, Homerton aforesaid, Tobacco Pipe Manufacturers, the sons of the said deceased, two of the executors named in the said will), are hereby required to send in particulars of their claims and demands, in writing, to the said executors, addressed to the said executors, to the care of the undersigned, their solicitor, on or before the 18th day of May, 1883, at the expiration of which time the said executors will proceed to distribute the assets of the said deceased amongst the parties entitled thereto, having regard only to the claims or demands of which the said executors, shall then have had notice; and that the said executors will not be liable for such assets, or any part thereof, so distributed to any person or persons of whose claims or demands they shall not then have had notice.–Dated this 11th day of April, 1883.

The business of Charles Maas, sometime in partnership with Marcus Maas.

The company is likely to be identified with that of Maas Brothers, (Leopold Maas, Sigismund Maas and Bernard Maas) of Wood Street Square, City, London and Heumuhlgasse, Vienna, who dissolved their partnership on the 31st January 1888, who were pipe importers and manufacturers.

C. Maas & Co. were converted into a limited liability company styled C. Maas & Co.Ltd. in c.1915

Charles Maas & Co. entered their marks 'CM' incuse and without outline, 'CM' incuse and contained within an oval, and 'CM' incuse and contained within an oval beneath a crown. These marks were entered a total of 22 times with the London Assay Office between the years 1883 and 1914. A further set of marks noted was 'CM' above 'MM' incuse and without outline, denoting the partnership of Charles Maas and Marcus Maas, that was registered with the LAO on the 24th September 1890.

The firms marks containing the crown were cancelled at the request of the Sheffield Assay Office on the 28th February 1896.

Charles Maas & Co. also entered their marks 'CM' incuse and without outline, 'CM' incuse and contained within an oval, with the Chester Assay Office.

ADOLPH FRANKAU & Co.

Established at London in 1847 as Adolph Frankau & Co. Following the death of Adolph Frankau in 1856, his widow entrusted the running of the business to an 18-year-old employee, Louis Blumfeld, and it was he who established the company's prominence in the British pipe industry.

It is uncertain as to whether 'BBB' stands for 'Blumfeld’s Best Briars' or 'Britain’s Best Briars', but the 'BBB' contained within a rhombus was the first pipe trade mark registered following the Trade Marks Act coming into force in 1876.

The business was converted into a limited liability company in 1899, styled Adolph Frankau & Co.Ltd.

The firm were noted as showing their wares at the Jewellers' Exhibition of 1914.

The firm entered the following marks with the London Assay Office: 'AF & Co.' contained in oblong punches, on the 17th March 1902 and 26th July 1907. 'L·B' (Louis Blumfeld) incuse and without outline, on the 7th July 1884. 'LB' contained in oblong punches, on the 12th January 1880 and 25th January 1881. 'L·B' contained in an oblong punch, on the 21st October 1893. 'LB' contained within an oval punch, on the 7th July 1882. Details of later registrations are not known at present.

The firm were also known to use the services of the Birmingham Assay Office.

The firm were also noted as having additional premises located at 7 & 8, Jeffreys Place, Camden Town.

Pipe mounters and manufacturers of smokers' requisites (vesta cases, cigar cutters, etc.).

Established in 1812 by Benjamin Barling. Restyled to Benjamin Barling & Sons c.1850 following the addition of Edwin and William Barling to the firm. Exhibitors at the Great Exhibition at London in 1851. Converted into a limited liability company, styled B. Barling & Sons Ltd., in 1955. The firm later became a subsidiary of The Imperial Tobacco Group.

The firm entered marks with the London Assay Office on many occasions, but essentially only of two styles. The first mark 'BB' contained within an oblong punch, was entered on the 23rd September 1815, and the second mark 'E·B' above 'W·B' incuse and without outline, was registered for the first time on the 22nd July 1869.
