I received this as a Christmas pressie and was wondering if anybody can provide any information for me

Nice Christmass present. I read the sterling silver marks as 1962 Birmingham.
Believe the maker's mark JS & S was used by James Swann & Son.

Thanks, really appreciate the advice, it is what I thought; only all the examples of James Swann & Sons I could find are in a shield with JS at the top and &S at the bottom

Here's a good site for identifying British maker's marks on thimbles. Your James Swann & Son mark is there.
