MONTREAL

The Toronto Silver Plate Company's representative here informs me that they will open an office in Room 60, Windsor Hotel, (Montreal), from October 8th to November 1st, so that out of town jewelers may have an opportunity of calling and inspecting the very large and up-to-date line of samples they will have on view.

The Toronto Silver Plate Co. are getting rapidly into shape, and expect to have some goods of their own manufacture upon the market in the course of the next few weeks. Under the able superintendance of Mr. J. A. Watts, the machinery is being put in, and the other arrangements pushed rapidly forward. They have already about thirty hands at work and expect to employ about fifty more when in full running order.

The Toronto Industrial Exhibition - 1890

The Toronto Silver Plate Co.

In a large plate glass show case, situated almost directly in front of the entrance to the "crystal palace,'' was to be found the very attractive exhibit of the Toronto Silver Plate Co., of this city. This company confined themselves this year exclusively to goods of their own manufacture, and in our opinion made fully as effective an exhibit as they have ever done in former years, when their own work was supplanted by the best available specimens of American skill. Their collection consisted exclusively of useful and ornamental hollow ware, and some of the pieces exhibited were exceedingly chaste in design and meritorious in finish. Amongst the most beautiful and striking of these was a fancy table, the top of which was supported by four semi nude female figures, known to heathen mythology as Caryatides. A richly decorated vase and lamp stand, also having the same kind of figures for supports, were much admired, and would compare favorably with any similar work turned out by the best European silversmiths. The regular tableware part of their exhibit gave ample evidence that the company is yearly improving the quality and finish of the goods they manufacture, and are bound to make them equal to anything of a similar kind turned out elsewhere.

There is no branch of manufacture that we know of which has made greater strides during the past ten years than that of electro plated silver ware, and any jeweler who made a careful inspection of the goods exhibited by the Toronto Silver Plate Co. must have been impressed by the fact that this Canada of ours is, for many lines of goods, fast becoming one of the most important manufacturing centres in the world. The Company are to be congratulated on the success of their purely Canadian exhibit, the quality and finish of which is bound to help their sales in the near future.

It will be a matter of regret to his many friends to learn that Mr. James A. Watts, for so many years connected with the Meriden Britannia Company, is about to leave Hamilton to take up his residence in Toronto. He Has decided to sever his relationship with the firm, with whom he has been connected for twenty years, and in company with several leading capitalists he will proceed at once with the erection and equipment of a factory for the manufacture of plated ware in Toronto. The capital stock of the new company is $100,000. Already a site has been secured on King street west, Toronto, and it is expected that the building will be erected by May next. Mr. Watts knows the Canadian trade so thoroughly, having been general agent of the Meriden Company for many years before the factory was established in Hamilton, that he may fairly look for a share of the business to come to the new establishment, of which he will be managing director. While sorry to lose so highly esteemed a citizen, and not too well pleased to see a Toronto establishment organized to compete with one in Hamilton, it must be admitted that Mr. Watts has so conducted himself as to earn a God-speed wherever he goes and should he return to Hamilton to spend the " pile " he makes in Toronto he will be sure of a hearty welcome.

Referring to the exhibit of silver plated ware by the Toronto Silver Plate Company at the late Toronto Industrial Exhibition, the 'Mail' says : —

" Those who admire the silversmith's art and beautiful sideboards and table ornaments should see the magnificent display of the Toronto Silver Plating Company, near the centre of the main building. All the goods shown in the case were designed, moulded, and finished at the company's works on King street, this city, and so great has been the demand for this style of work that where twelve men were employed a year ago, thirty men are now engaged in the different branches. The six epergnes shown are equal, if not superior, to any that can be made outside this city, the designs being of the handsomest and the work of the most artistic. In the east front of the case is a set of majolica table ware, mounted in heavy plate, which will compare favourably with anything from Europe. There are wine urns, Bohemian vases, Wedgewood ware, strawberry and cream dishes, fruit dishes, cut glass claret jugs, opaque and damask gold vases, tilting ice pitchers, tete-a-tete sets. There is a beautiful salad bowl, hand painted, and oxidized in gold and silver. The delicate tracing and repousse work on some of the exhibits surprise those who keep no account of the strides of art in this city. The display attracts great attention."

The competition in Silverware at the Toronto Exhibition was very keen, both the " Meriden Britannia Co." and the " Toronto Silver Plate Co." having put forth every effort to win the coveted honors. We don't know who the judges were, but they seem to have been under the impression that "honors were easy," as they awarded each of them gold and silver medals. In both cases the exhibits were exceedingly handsome, and reflect the highest credit upon the manufacturers. We understand that in both exhibits, all the goods were made from the metal in their respective factories. This branch of manufacture has certainly made great strides in Canada since the advent of the N. P.
