James Thomson, for many years in the clock repairing department of Bigelow, Kennard & Co., has been promoted to the managership in succession to William C. Morgan, who recently passed away as a result of pneumonia following influenza. Mr. Morgan had been in charge of the department for 22 years. He was an exceptionally fine workman and a highly conscientious man, greatly respected by his associates. It is a regrettable fact that the whole personnel of the department during the last two or three weeks has been affected by the epidemic, but with the exception of Mr. Morgan, they have all been able to resume their work.

Employers of Bigelow, Kennard & Co., the Washington street jewelers and stationers, on February 13 organized the Bigelow, Kennard & Co. Association. Dinner was served at Louis' restaurant. Sixty-five were present with Alanson Bigelow, Jr., and Homer Bigelow, members of the firm, as guests. Edmund T. Glover was elected president; Edward H. Ensign, vice-president, and Windsor N. Cobb, secretary and treasurer.

JOHN BIGELOW

John Bigelow, of Boston, a resident member from 1868, was born in Westminster, Massachusetts, May 26, 1802; and died in Boston, January 2, 1878. He came to Boston about 1824, and was followed by his brothers, Alanson and A. O. Bigelow, and the firm of Bigelow Brothers, was formed. Under this style, and that of Bigelow Brothers and Kennard, and Bigelow, Kennard and Company, the house maintained a reputation imparted to it by the personal character of its originator.

Mr. Bigelow was identified with many associations connected with the growth of Boston, and which marked the development of that culture which is one of its characteristics. He held many positions of trust, and was a member of the legislature of Massachusetts in 1851-52, and again in 1863-64. He was for many years a director in the Collateral Loan Company, and president of the same at the time of his death. He was treasurer of the Columbian Lodge of Freemasons, for more than a quarter of a century; a member of the De Molay Encampment of Knights Templar, and in May, 1859, one of the number who made the pilgrimage to Richmond, Virginia.

He was fond of music, and was one of the early members of the Handel and Haydn Society, and elected an honorary member. He was also a member of other musical associations.

He had business relations as director with several leading manufacturing corporations, and after an honorable business career of half a century, he sought retirement, in order to fulfil his mission to increase the happiness of those around him. Those who needed his aid knew where to find a ready counsellor and a willing friend. He was survived by a widow and three daughters.

Jason Weiler & Son have purchased for $15,600 the large collection of diamonds which the liquidating agent of the Cosmopolitan Trust Co. had for sale. The stones were secured in Europe by an agent of the company while it was in active business. The books showed that they represented an investment of $38,574. The diamonds were valued by Alanson Bigelow, of Bigelow, Kennard & Co., Inc.

Alanson Bigelow of Boston, Mass., son of Luke and Asenath (Winship) Bigelow, was born in Westminster, Mass., May 20, 1809, and he early went to Boston and engaged with his brothers in mercantile life, and formed the firm of Bigelow Brothers, importers and dealers. He married in Cambridge, Nov. 1, 1835, Anne Rebecca Bangs, daughter of Isaiah and Deborah (Bigelow) Bangs; born in Montreal, Nov. 3, 1816; died in Cambridge, May 24, 1861. He married second, Nov. 18, 1863, Mary J. Hudson, widow of Oliver Hudson, and daughter of Horatio G. and Kezia E. (Goodnow) Ware. He died in Boston, Feb. 29, 1884. Their children were:

Ellen Ann, b. Sept. 27, 1840; m. June 19, 1860, Amory Houghton, Jr.. son of Amory and Sophronia Houghton.

The engagement of Miss Marie E. Tenney, of Brooklyn, and Frank Bigelow Kennard, of Manhattan, was one of the social announcements of the week. Mr. Kennard is the son of the late William H. Kennard, of Bigelow, Kennard & Co., jewelers, Boston, Mass., and Miss Tenney is the daughter of Mrs. Asa W. Tenney and the late Judge Tenney.

John Bigelow of Boston, son of Luke and Asenath (Winship) Bigelow, was born in Westminster, Mass., May 26, 1802; married, Dec. 1, 1830, Lydia, daughter of Eli and Lydia (Richardson) Starr; born in Stoneham, Aug. 21, 1805. He went to Boston about the year 1824, and was soon followed by his brothers Alanson and Abraham O. He early, engaged in business as a dealer in watches and jewelry, and with his brothers formed the firm of Bigelow Brothers, under this style and that of Bigelow Brothers & Kennard, and Bigelow, Kennard & Co. They have maintained a high reputation as importers and dealers in watches and jewelry. He was elected a member of the Legislature of 1851-52, again in 1863-64; was admitted a member of Columbian Lodge, F. A. M., in 1845, and was its Treasurer for more than a quarter of a century, also a member of De Molay Cornmandery Knight Templars. He was an active member of several musical associations and a director in several leading manufacturing corporations. After an honorable business career of over fifty years he retired from active business life, and died in Boston, Jan. 2, 1878. Their children were:

Abraham O. Bigelow, son of Luke and Asenath (Winship) Bigelow, was born in Westminster, Mass., May 20, 1809. Like his brothers John and Alanson, he early went to Boston and learned the watchmaking trade, and soon after started in business with his brothers in the firm of Bigelow Brothers, importers and dealers in watches and jewelry; afterwards the firm of Bigelow, Kennard & Co. In 1876, having amassed considerable property, he retired from business. He was well known in the banking world, having been connected with the Massachusetts National Bank for many years as one of its Directors, and President from 1881 to 1887. He was twice elected a member of the board of Aldermen of the city of Boston, and was twice elected to the Legislature. He was a great lover of music and at one time was President of the Handel and Haydn Society. He married, June 7, 1841, Olivia A. Dodd, daughter of James Dodd of Boston. They had one daughter.

One of the most attractive booths at the Atlantic City Boardwalk, Mechanics Hall, brief mention of which was made last week, is that of Bigelow Kennard & Company, Inc., where there is probably the most valuable collection in the exposition. The booth has been artistically arranged with costly art objects set off against hangings of Italian tapestry and Spanish brocade. In addition to furnishing its own booth Bigelow Kennard & Co. have supplied many of the other booths in the exposition with chandeliers and lamps of varied types.

Miss Ethel Melavin, in the cashier's department, Bigelow, Kennard & Co. for 13 years, was recently married to Henry Moynahan, who is associated with M. Lurie. Mr. Moynahan is vice president of the International Jewelry Workers' Union. Miss Gertrude Larkin has taken the position formerly held by Miss Melavin.

Windsor N. Cobb, who has been managing the Boylston St. branch store of Bigelow, Kennard & Co. since its opening, is to leave Boston Sept. 1 for San Francisco, where he will take charge of the silver department of Treat & Eacret, whose new store is to open about Nov. 1. Mr. Cobb entered the employ of Bigelow, Kennard & Co. in 1889 and has been with them ever since, except for two years and a half, which he spent in California, during the greater part of which he was with Shreve & Co., of San Francisco.
