The above report probably relates to the Weybosset Jewelry Company, who were agents for Reed & Barton.

CLEVELAND, OHIO

What is said to be one of the largest silver contracts ever given to one firm of jewelers and silversmiths in the history of the hotel business in this country was closed during the past month, when E.M. Statler awarded to Reed & Barton of New York a contract for $40,000 worth of silver for the new Statler Hotel in process of construction here. The new building will be opened the latter part of this year and will be the finest hotel between New York and Chicago. It is twelve stories high, contains seven hundred rooms with baths, and will cost about $2,500,000 when completed.

Considerable comment was made in the trade in New Orleans on the account published in the Circular of the Reed & Barton Corporation securing the order for the large silver set for the Maharajah of Darwini. It was referred to as a triumph of American progress in the arts.

Death of an Old Silversmith

Taunton, Mass., May 18.—Jonathan J. Green, for 40 years an employe of Reed & Barton, died this week. He was a native of England and came to this country when a young man. He learned the silversmith's trade at the works of the Gleason Co., Dorchester, Mass. From there he went to the Reed & Barton works and continued until advancing age forced him to give up labor. He was 95 years of age at the time of his death, with a record for nearly a century of upright living, and regarded in Taunton as at the head of the special department of silversmithing which he followed.

Reed & Barton Bring Suit To Protect Patent on Baby Spoons

Boston, Mass., Feb. 2.—As predicted in these columns, several weeks ago, the corporation of Reed & Barton, silversmiths, of Taunton, Mass., through its president, W. B. H. Dowse, of 95 Milk St., Boston, has instituted suit against the Oneida Community, Ltd., of the State of New York, for alleged infringement of the patents on the so-called “baby spoon” owned by the former.

Mr. Dowse, in speaking of the case today, stated that the suit was brought for the alleged infringement of but one pattern. The president of the Reed & Barton corporation stated that the suit would probably be tried in March, and intimated that some interesting developments might be looked for.

The plated ware trade throughout the country has manifested much interest in this proposed action of Reed & Barton, and the trial will be watched with interest.

Reed & Barton, Taunton, Mass., and 41 Union Square, New York, are showing a collection of patriotic souvenir spoons conspicuous for beautiful and artistic designs and most satisfactory finish. One specimen of this collection is a sterling silver Dewey spoon, oxidized finish, an etched picture of Commodore Dewey's flagship Olympia appearing upon the bowl, and an exquisitely etched portrait of the Commodore himself upon the handle. Both pictures are etched in black and Commodore Dewey’s portrait is reproduced with the life-likeness of a photograph. Another of the firm’s spoons is in silver gilt, showing the Stars and Stripes in inlaid enamel upon the bowl. Still another design consists of a silver gilt spoon with enameled bowl, showing the Stars and Stripes reflected against a sky background. All of the spoons are heavy and solid and evidence fine workmanship. A Maine spoon is also among the collection.
