I thought I was really learning, but I purchased an international sugar shell marked Deepsilver. What is that? Is it plate? Thanks so much. Janice.

Yes, you are correct. That name was given to one of International Silver's silverplated lines. Kit

In the late 1800's, the Holmes & Edwards Silver Company began putting small blocks of silver at the wear points on the backs of spoons and forks prior to silverplating them. They called these pieces "Sterling Inlaid" or "Silver Inlaid" flatware.
Holmes & Edwards became part of International Silver in 1898. In 1956 the "Holmes & Edwards Silver Inlaid" trademark was changed to "Holmes & Edwards Deepsilver". In 1960 the trademark changed again to "International Deepsilver". By 1972 the sterling inlaid feature had been discontinued.

Hello, I am hoping this image of a cutlery mark that I collected a couple of months ago could illustrate this old 2007 post. Since this "Deep Silver" question was posted huge amounts of associated information has been accrued on the Forum involving Holmes & Edwards. A chunk of it can be found at the below link.

We see Holmes & Edwards, Deepsilver and the "IS" mark to say "Inlaid Sterling" to indicated the addition of extra silver for at high wear areas.

I believe in this case the 'IS' is the mark of the International Silver Co.
