The Seventeenth Annual A.N.R.J.A. Gathering Held at Cincinnati Aug, 29-Sept. 1, 1922

The R. Wallace & Sons Mfg. Co., Wallingford, Conn., as usual at A. N. R. J. A. conventions, had one of the finest exhibits. It was in Room 762. The exhibit this year featured the Old English service pattern, known as the Wallace "Sheraton" service. In the production of this service the company has built on an artistic foundation, which for more than a century has given delight and satisfaction to succeeding generations. Sheraton was the apostle of the severe taste which followed the Rococo leanings of Chippendale. Under the inspiration of Sheraton's words and works, the R. Wallace & Sons Mfg. Co. has designed a service which embodies the characteristics of his most beautiful creations and the pieces are of such enduring plate that they will become treasured heirlooms for future generations to use. The "Cleo" line of sterling toilet ware and "Vesta" line of grey oxidized finish were also shown, as was the "Dorothy Q" plated flat ware line. The latter will be ready for delivery Oct. 15. The "Princess Mary" patterns in sterling silver also attracted considerable attention from the many guests who visited "Sandusky Bill," who was in charge of the exhibit, assisted by his son.

Death of Franklin Wallace

Hartford, Conn., March 27.—Franklin Wallace died at his home in Cheshire, March 11th, aged 68, from the effects of disease contracted in the army. He was one of Cheshire’s well-known citizens. Mr. Wallace was born in Prospect and lived there for many years, being actively engaged in the development of the manufacture of friction matches when that industry was in its infancy. For many years he resided in Cheshire, where he had charge of the transportation of all the German silver used by his brother, the late Robert Wallace, of Wallingford, in the manufacture of the spoons, forks, etc., sold by the Meriden Britannia Co., Meriden. Of late years he had been extensively engaged in peach culture, having some of the finest orchards in that celebrated peach-growing locality.

Deceased was a member of Company A, 20th Connecticut Volunteers. He leaves a widow and three children, Frank L. Wallace, of New Haven, Lucy H., wife of E. R. Lawton, of Cheshire, and Katie U., wife of the Hon. John W. Mix, of Yalesville, the present Senator from the Sixth District.

WALLACE BROTHERS

Having foresight commensurate with his ambition, Robert Wallace, with his sons, Robert B. and William J., reserved the right to make, on their own account, forks, spoons and other flatware of any other metals than nickel silver. Mr. Wallace then began to make sterling table silver in addition to the nickel silver (which by the way he was now equipped to electroplate), and three or four years later he went to the other extreme and brought out a line of steel spoons and forks, commonly spoken of in the trade as “tin,” because they are plated with this material. This latter line was brought out by a separate company known as Wallace Brothers, and composed of his sons, Robert B., William J., Henry L., George M., and Frank A., and two sons-in-law, W. J. Leavenworth and D. E. Morris. (This company was later merged into R. Wallace & Sons Mfg. Co.) The bringing out of these two new lines illustrates well the ambition, the practicality, and the mechanical genius of the man. He wanted lines to sell to all classes of people; sterling to the wealthy, plate to the multitude, and “tin” for cheaper trade; and he was mechanically versatile enough to produce good products in all three of these classes of material.

Col. W. J. Leavenworth, of R. Wallace & Sons Mfg. Co., was most triumphantly elected one of Wallingford’s representatives to the State Legislature at Tuesday’s election. In speaking of his nomination a local paper said : “ Colonel Walter J. Leavenworth, coming here as he did over twenty-five years ago and working himself up from almost a boy among the townspeople of Wallingford, until now he stands as one of the heads of one of the leading manufacturing industries of the town, is expressly acknowledged in his own i town and throughout the State as one of the ablest and most intelligent business men in Connecticut.”
