Raymond Unger Kills Himself

Raymond Unger, president of Unger Bros., silversmiths and cut glass manufacturers at No. 416 Halsey Street, Newark, N. J., committed suicide Wednesday evening of last week at his home, No. 110 Cooper Avenue, Montclair, N. J. His suicide made the third president of the Unger Bros. to meet a violent death in five years.

Mr. Unger was 28 years of age. His wife and three-year-old daughter Sibyl were on a visit to Mrs. Unger's father, R. A. Dugan, in Evanston, Ill.

Mr. Unger attended to his duties as usual at the factory on Wednesday. Officials and clerks at the factory said he appeared to be in good spirits.
In the afternoon he went to his home and, retiring to his bedroom, instructed a maid to awaken him at 5 o'clock. There was no response when the maid knocked. Opening the door, she saw Unger lying on the bed. Unable to arouse him, she called neighbors, and it was found that he was dead.

County Physician Simmons said that Unger had died from drinking cyanide of potassium. In a flask was some of the poison, which he had obtained at the factory.

In July, 1908, Herman Unger, an uncle of Raymond, who was president of the firm, shot himself to death on the bank of the Raritan River.

Eugene Unger, father of Raymond, succeeded him to the presidency. He was killed while riding horseback 16 months ago. The son, Raymond, then became president.

Besides his mother, widow and daughter. the suicide is survived by two sisters, Mrs, G. La Rue Masters and Miss Helen Unger, and a brother, Kenneth. None of Unger's relatives or business associates could give any motive for his suicide.

Newark, N.J., Nov.20. - There was a panic in the jewelery and silversmith establishment of Unger Bros., in this city, today, when a reservoir on the top of the building burst, and the water poured down upon the occupants of the place. A portion of the roof was crushed in, and through the opening water poured into the building and flooded every floor. There were 200 employees at work when the break occured. They became panic stricken and rushed for the exits. All were thoroughly drenched, but no one was injured. The loss has not yet been estimated, but will be heavy.

It was reported in some of the daily papers that H. Unger, of Unger Brothers & Co., 412 Haley street, Newark, N. J., was dead. The report is contradicted by Mr. Unger himself, who says he was never in better health.

Death of Eugene Unger

Newark, N. J., Nov. 20.—The sudden death of Eugene Unger, President of Unger Bros., Newark, N. J., and one of the best known men in the Newark jewelry trade, who died on Tuesday last, as published briefly in the last issue of The Jewelers’ Circular-Weekly, was a shock to the trade. The funeral was held, Thursday, at St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church, Madison, N. J.

Mr. Unger had recently removed from Newark, N. J., to Madison, N. J., a suburb, and frequently took horseback rides for exercise. As he was approaching his home, Tuesday morning, about seven o’clock, his horse started to enter the grounds by the north gate. Mr. Unger, it is reported, tried to check him and turn toward the south gate. It is believed that the horse became unmanageable and threw Mr. Unger against a tree. In some way Mr. Unger fell, or was thrown, to the ground and received spinal injuries from which he died within an hour.

For nearly 40 years deceased was associated in the jewelry and silverware business as a manufacturer. At the time of his death he was president of the firm of Unger Bros., a firm that he entered as boy in his ’teens. The business was established by his brother, Herman Unger, five brothers having been associated together. When first established their trade was largely in the jewelry line, but as the silverware trade developed they became more interested in its manufacture, and in the course of years built up a large trade.

The late Mr. Unger represented the firm on the road for a number of years, calling on the trade in the south, principally Baltimore, Washington and Philadelphia. He also had an extensive acquaintance in the Empire State. During the last decade however, he devoted more attention to the manufacturing end of the business.

Mr. Unger was in his 59th year, and besides his connection with the jewelry business, was a director in the Manufacturer National Bank, president of the board of trustees of St. Paul’s Church, a member of the Baltusrol Club and a member of the Newark Board of Trade. He leaves two sons and two daughters. The eldest son, Raymond, is vice-president of the company and the younger, Kenneth, is 12 years old. One daughter is the wife of G. Le Rue Masters, who has for a number of years been associated in the management of the business.

It was Mr. Unger's intention, so it is stated, that he would give up active business on his 60th birthday and turn the business over to the younger members the firm.

Unger Bros, offer to the trade a novel line of jewelry. They have been at great trouble and expense to obtain fac similes of ancient coins, some of them dating as far back as the year 500 b. c., and from these have made unique charms in silver. There is the greatest variety imaginable, the fac similes having been obtained from one of the most complete collections of coins that there is in existence. The reproductions are perfect representations of the different coins, and cannot fail to be popular with the public.

UNGER BROS.—Profitable side lines continue to be the subject of discussion among enterprising and up-to-date pharmacists. A notable contribution to the subject is made in the present number by Unger Bros., of 412-418 Halsey street and 26-36 Beecher street, Newark, N. J., who illustrate a line of brushes, mirrors and combs which can be handled to undoubted advantage by the retail druggists. This advertisement should be studied carefully.
