HOW, William (Grimwade p.552 and 405)

Post by buckler »

There is considerable confusion over William How and William Howes or Howse.
But like Grimwade I think that they were separate.

7 August 1771- William How entered a mark as smallworker at 30, Quaker Buildings, the first known mark.

PR1777
William How appears as bucklemaker, 30 Quaker Buildings.

29th August 1777 - Gazetteer and New Daily Advertiser, carries an advertisement for the auction of :-
"The genuine household furniture together with the stock, utensils and near 4000 curious and modern patterns of Mr William How, Silver and Stone Buckle Maker at his dwelling house No 29, in Quakers Buildings in West- Smithfield "
So William How appears to be selling up.

But on the 22nd & 28th of August 1777, a William How & William Clark entered joint marks as Bucklemakers at Lamb Street, Spittle Square.
William Clarke had already entered a sole mark at the same address in March of that year. Something of a co-incidence if Clarke’s partner was not the ex Quaker Building man.

This is believed to be the mark of William How & William Clark of 1777

Not on a buckle , but on a pair of top hinged sugar tongs . Curiously these tongs bear no assay marks, only the makers mark struck twice to each arm

I've never encountered the marks on buckles yet
