An Innovation in Merchandising

Daniel Low & Co., Salem, Mass., have just opened a gift section known as "Colonial Hall."

Image

This is really a "room of gifts," comprising china, stationery, brassware, lamps, small pieces of furniture, mirrors, pictures and novelties. With this new feature, the concern's floor space is doubled.

Colonial Hall is located in the First Church building, recently purchased by the firm, which has occupied quarters here for 49 years. Colonial Hall is an innovation in jewelry salesrooms. A beautiful staircase with low broad treads that suggest ease in mounting, has been installed and takes the shopper up to the restful, roomy display section, which has been left as designed by the architect, with black walnut woodwork and Colonial yellow walls. Even a large old chandelier hangs from the center of the ceiling, but made brilliant by the illumination of 240 glass prisms. Up at the left was an organ loft, which is now an alcove bordered by the mezzanine, on which antique, graceful furniture is shown. During the holiday season a Christmas tree was shown in this part of the store, in attractive Yuletide array.

The first meeting house in Salem was built on the spot now occupied by the firm, in 1634. The original title was given nearly 300 years ago, and now the first new deed is recorded. The historical atmosphere alone that surrounds the new purchase will undoubtedly prove a helpful advertising factor.

Among the latest and most attractive conceptions in Easter spoons is the new egg and coffee spoon originated and manufactured by Daniel Low, the maker of "Witch" spoons, Salem, Mass. The design of the handle represents two chickens just coming from the eggs. The stem between this and the bowl contains the word, Easter. The die is very deeply cut, and thus the spoon is a heavy one, weighing about half an ounce. It is made with either silver or gold bowl, and is a very suitable Easter gift, and will undoubtedly have a large sale. An advantage accruing to the jeweler handling these goods resides in the fact that they will be extensively advertised by the maker in leading monthly magazines.

We regret to announce the death of George C. Rogers, of Salem, Mass., one of the oldest employees of Daniel Low & Co., of Salem, Mass. He was born and educated in Salem, and at fifteen years of age entered the employ of Mr. Low, with whom he had been continuously until the time of his death, at the age of fifty-one years, having seen thirty-six years’ service with the concern, About two months ago he resigned because of heart trouble with which he was affected. He was a fine musician and played a clarinet in the Salem Cadet band, of which he was one of the original members and was for many years its treasurer. He was a prominent Odd Fellow and was also a member of the Jewelers’ League of New York. He leaves a widow, two sons, a daughter and mother.
