The subject of researching the cigarette lighter trade is a difficult one, and it is somewhat of an overlap to to the normal research of marks and makers of gold and silverwares. Not all cigarette manufacturers made their products in precious metals, those that did, some made them for a short period only, for others, they were regular stock lines.

All in all, the topic will have to include all cigarette lighter makers, regardless of whether it is known that they made any of their wares in precious metals or not, as it will only become apparent (hopefully) in the long term, exactly who was involved in the use of these metals.

CIGAR LIGHTERS GOOD SELLERS

A really practical pocket cigar lighter is something that every smoker will be certain to use with increasing satisfaction. Stationers who sell cigars will find no trouble in making customers for it. Those that do not carry tobacco should be able to see the possibility of sales in pushing the lighter as a holiday gift article for men. In producing the Nassau lighter, an illustration of which is presented herewith, this fact has been sedulously borne in mind, with the result that the manufacturers not only believe that they have a device that is as perfect as human ingenuity can make it, but unqualifiedly guarantee it to give absolute satisfaction in every respect.



Although about the size of a small pocket match safe, the Nassau lighter has a benzine chamber with a capacity sufficient for ten days' or two weeks' use, and it can be refilled in a moment. Simply press the little button up the side and the cover flies open, the tooth wheel produces friction on a little piece of ceric iron, and the resultant hot spark ignites the vapor of the benzine. The novelty of the operation is always certain to arouse interest in the Nassau lighter, and its perfect work makes a lasting friend of the smoker.

The Nassau lighter is made in genuine German silver, gold plate, sterling silver and solid 14k gold—at retail prices ranging from $1 to $75. It is made in a great variety of staple patterns, and can be had also hand engraved or decorated with society, Masonic, Elk, college and fraternity emblems, as desired. The genuine German silver lighters are heavily plated on solid German silver. The gold-plated, on oreide, a golden yellow alloy which brings up the fine, deep color of the gold plate.

The company has just issued an unusually attractive catalogue in colors, which shows handsome reproductions of the various types of lighters, and in a most interesting way tells the story of the manufacture of the Nassau lighter. THORENS AUTOMATIC POCKET CIGAR LIGHTER SCORES BIG SUCCESS

It is sad, but true, but a bad reputation has attached itself to a cigar lighter. Ask a friend about one—consult your own experience—and the immediate answer is “They're all the same, work a few days and then you have to throw them away. They're all the same—no good.”

But a “long felt need has been filled" and this kind of talk is a thing of the past. A new lighter—The Thorens Automatic Pocket Lighter has been placed on the market by Hermann Thorens, of Sainte Croix, Switzerland, with temporary offices at 140 West Forty-second street, and has already scored a wonderful success.

The lighter has many features that are novel. First of all it works—uniformly and dependably. Second, it is automatic. By pressing the catch, the lid flies open striking with exactly the right speed and pressure, so that the flint and iron wheel come together to give a fat, hot spark which easily ignites the wick. This gives a generous flame that will light the smoker's cigarette, cigar or pipe for a long time on the filling of a few drops of benzine. The filling is another feature facilitated by improved and simplified construction. The flint is renewable, and there are no other moving parts to get out of order. The lighter may be obtained in gold, silver and nickle, varying not in quality of the article, but only in the composition of the case.

The Hermann Thorens concern, which was founded in 1883 and has its factory in Saint Croix, Switzerland, is the sole owner of the lighter patent, which is numbered 1,359,003 in the United States Patent Office. The concern is well known for the manufacture of talking machine works, musical boxes, mouth organs and pocket lighter's. It is said that the man once using the Thorens automatic will never go back to matches or any other kind of lighter. All interested in this line of goods are invited to visit the Thorens headquarters, suite 72, 140 West Forty-second street to inspect the beautiful line of samples, which will be on display from July 11 until the end of the month.

In a pocket friction lighter, a box having a reservoir, a lid hinged to the box, a wick burner mounted in the box, a bracket extending upwardly from one side of the box, a roughened wheel rotatably mounted in the bracket, pins projecting from one face of the wheel, an arm continuing upwardly from the bracket and terminating in a holder, a pyrophoric stone in the holder, a spring surrounding the pivot of the lid hinge and having one arm bearing against the stone to hold the latter in yielding engagement with the periphery of the wheel, an extinguisher supported by the other arm of the spring and positioned within the lid, a plate secured to the lid and a hook arm pivotally connected with considerable friction to the plate for coacting with the pins to partially rotate the wheel upon opening of the lid and designed to slide on the top of the box upon the closing of the lid, and catch means releasably holding the lid closed.

The Nassau Lighter Company, who started a very good factory in the Rosenbaum building, making gold and silver cigar lighters and novelties, had 60 hands working and were doing a nice business. After about a year in business they have now quit. George H. Greenhalge was superintendent. The office was at East Twenty-third street, New York City.

The Nassau Lighter Company, of 114 East Twenty-third street, New York City, have opened a factory here in the Rosenbaum building, Brook and Astor streets, to make a line of 14 and 18-karat gold, sterling and German silver pocket lighters and other novelties. A full complement of machinery has been installed. Maurice E. Bandler and G. L. Hess have charge of the New York end, and George H. Greenhaigh is superintendent of the factory. Arthur Bandler is in Paris much of the time looking for new ideas.

An Iron Match

A new line of automatic lighters for pocket, table and wall is being placed on the market under the trade name Auermetall Lighters, by Otto Thurnauer, 215, Fourth Avenue, New York City. All these new lighters, whether pocket, table or wall, are made and operate on the same principle. There is a patented stick with a convenient knob for holding in the fingers which fits into a special metal case. When a light is wanted, this stick is pulled out of the case and struck on the side of the case the same as a match would be struck.



Among the claims made for the Auermetall Lighter are, there are no mechanical parts to get out of order, there is no wick or other part to renew, and it is said to be practically everlasting It operates like a match, and in the case of the pocket lighter the device cannot open or ignite in the pocket. The pocket lighter weighs 1¾ ounces, not too large to be conveniently carried in any pocket.



The manufacturers recommend the Auermetall Lighter for sale especially by dealers in hardware and household goods, sporting goods and novelties, by jewelers and in cigar stores.

Pipe Lighter ls Designed

Now available in most pipe shops is the new Nimrod pipelighter, an invention of an ex-G. I., Ashley Ward, Jr. from Cincinnati, who has formed his own company to make the lighter. Ward bases his lighter on a radically different principle in mechanical lighters. It works like a chimney, with the flame being drawn down through the 'flue' by the normal drawing action of the smoker. This is said to eliminate the puff and pull experienced by every pipe smoker who has tried to light a pipe with ordinary lighters.



With the new “down draft’ design of the Nimrod the smoker does not have to rely on sheer lung intake power to bend or pull the flame into the bowl. The Nimrod flame is drawn straight down into the bowl by the easy natural breath intake of smoking. Its the 'chimney' that minimizes the puff and pull experienced by every pipe 'chimney' that minimizes the pull.

The new fighter is all-aluminum and is described as compact and light.
