STEALING SILVER - John Walton (22), strip caster, Perry Barr, was charged with stealing about 4oz. 11dwts. of silver, the property of Messrs. Adie & Lovekin, silversmiths, 30, Snape Street. Mr. Cheston prosecuted. The prisoner was in the employment of Mr. Bassett, metal dealer, James Street, and he was allowed by his master to melt silver for the silversmiths. On Wednesday afternoon, Mr. Lovekin took to the prisoner about 11oz. of silver, to be melted. Whilst he was with the prisoner, he noticed a loose brick at the back of the furnace, and his suspicions being excited, he sent the prisoner for a newspaper. When Walton had gone for the newspaper, Mr. Lovekin pulled out the loose brick, and found 4oz. 11dwts. of silver concealed behind it. The prisoner, who pleaded guilty, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour.

Re: Information Regarding Adie & Lovekin and Adie Brothers
Customs agents at a London airport decided the overcoat pockets were not the conventional place for dashing 45-year-old Indian hotel manager Dakshing Ranjau Bannerjee to be carrying 12 solid gold tea spoons worth £300 and 12 gold saucers worth slightly more.
They searched Bannerjee, one-time manager of Bombay's Taj Mahal Hotel, and his luggage, found "the finest gold tea and dinner service ever made in England".
When Bannerjee was fined £500 or three months' imprisonment this week for fraudulently attempting to avoid export restrictions, the public got a look at a fabulous 18-carat gold set made by the Adie brothers, of Birmingham, at a cost of more than £10,000 for an Indian maharajah.
Already delivered were a tray costing £2,500. Seized on the person of delivery agent Bannerjee were one pastry serve worth £205; six teacups and saucers at £240 for a cup and saucer; six coffee cups and saucers at £175 for a cup and saucer; 12 pastry forks at £11 each; 12 teaspoons at £25 each; 12 coffee spoons at £11 each; a pair of sugar tongs at £22; and a cake tray of unspecified value.
Said a spokesman for Adie brothers (Mr. F. J. Taylor): "The set has taken more than a year to make and follows an ancient Indian design."
At the end of the week the Government was seeking a buyer for the confiscated service to prevent its being melted down.
The biggest snag: a British buyer would have to pay £3,000 purchase tax on a £3,000 service.
