Fire in Silver

The New England Veteran Firemen’s League have decided upon a trophy for the championship prize of the yearly muster instead of the usual money award. The trophy is in the form of a fireman’s torch of solid silver and was made by the Gorham Mfg. Co. The extreme length of the torch is four feet three inches, and the width across the oil basin is eight inches. This basin forms the feature of the torch. On its surface within a wreath are embossed figures of firemen in service dress, holding a discharge pipe and playing on the ruins of a fire. On the top of this basin are 12 spaces within scrolls, and in them will be engraved the names of the companies which will have won the championship prize, the date and record of play. On the upper hand of the basin is the inscription ; “Trophy New England States Veteran Firemen’s League.”

The torch is mounted on an ebony staff with silver finial. The trophy weighs about three pounds.

Louis Votto was arrested last week by Central Office detectives in the Hotel Cadillac and held in $2,000 bail by Magistrate Corrigan for trial on a charge of stealing bronze statues and antiques. Complaints have reached the police recently from dealers in Fourth and Fifth Ave. regarding thefts of bronzes and detectives were put to work on the case. When arrested Votto was inspecting pieces of bronze in the parcel room at the hotel. The Gorham Co.’s detective became suspicious of the man after he had been at the store on several occasions and decided to watch him. He states that Vetto came to the store last Tuesday and was for some time in the bronze department. Votto said that he was waiting for his mother. When he left the store he was shadowed by the Gorham detective and traced to the Hotel Cadillac. When arrested and taken to police headquarters a package of old Dutch spoons valued at $100 were found on the prisoner, the police say. These spoons were later identified by John Fenning, 428 Fifth Ave., as his property. The value of the bronzes taken from the Gorham Co. was about $150. The prisoner explained to the police that he lived in Providence, R. I. He was held in $1,000 bail on the Gorham Co. charge and in $1,000 bail on the Fenning charge.

William J. Kearney, who pleaded guilty to stealing from the Gorham Mfg. Co. , was last Wednesday discharged by Judge Martine. The Gorham Co. did not press the charge, and the judge took this fact and the previous respectability of the prisoner into consideration.
