Pain Brothers / Pain's of Hastings
3 Nelson Rd. Hastings & "Presents House" Hastings, probably much earlier at 26 Githa Road Hastings

In the 1905 Kelly's Directory of Sussex, Part 2, we have Pain Brothers, 3 Nelson rd. Hastings as retail jewellers.

Entries were the same in the Kelly's 1911 & 1915 Directory of Sussex. The concern morphed into "Pain's, Present House, Hastings" selling a large range of goods including watches, rings and other jewellery, cutlery and electroplated ware. They also used illustrated catalogues and agents in their marketing. One catalogue, said to date from 1920, names the proprietor as W.T.Pain and established 31 years.

Image

At least some of Pain Brothers electroplated tableware (spoons & fork seen), as well as having the name and Hastings on are further trademarked with "Mirror Silver". This is shown with the sugar tongs in the composite below.

Image

The pocket watch dial has "True Briton" on together with the name and town. The back plate in that watch also has "Presents House Hastings" and "Pain Brothers" on to suggest "watchmaking" but in the trade directories I checked, they did not appear to be listed as watchmakers. There was another "True Briton" pocket watch on line, in a Chester case with the fairly obvious curly "A" date letter for 1901 (back plate not displayed). In fact a European based "Watchmaking Company of Bassecourt" had in 1901 recruited Pain Brothers of Hastings, as sellers of their watch movements. Subsequently I saw on line a "True Briton" in a "R" Chester silver case. A Lancashire Watch Co. case indicating "R" for 1900.
The "Presents House" on the back plate of my pictured watch, together with the box lid, pictured below, carrying the same address indicates the close association of Pains and Pain Brothers.

Image

The Pain's catalogue mentioned earlier was 8 pages long and in addition to the "jewellery" items you would expect, it offered toys and "good horn gramophones with 6 free tunes and 200 needles £5 carriage paid".

So what about 26 Githa road? It is found in Kelly's Directory of Sussex, 1899. There is a listing; Pain Brothers, publishers, 26 Githa road.
I found no "Pain Brothers" (or similar) entries in the Kelly's Directory of Sussex, 1890 or 1891.
From a Dec 1947 news paper I found this death notice. "Died William Thomas Pain, founder of Pain’s Present House, Ltd., Hastings, in his 82nd year" (Hastings and St Leonards Observer)
Unexpectedly from an August 1947 newspaper another death notice. "at the age of 82, Mr. Henry Thomas Pain. of T. F. Pain Ltd., Printers and Publishers (Kentish Express)
A coincidence? Brothers Pain?

Pain Brothers / Pain's of Hastings .......Retailers of Jewellery and Gifts

"Presents House" Hastings

This is probably some novelty advertising packaging.

Image

Another example of "Presents House" and Pain Brothers showing the close association with "Pains of Hastings". Sadly still no address for Presents House itself.

GORDON FARRER

Folkstone

Great determination was shown by jewel thieves at Folkestone the other day when the Gordon Farrer store was robbed of $5,000 worth of jewelry. The thieves climbed along a six inch pipe, cut a large hole in a window, then a panel out of a door, and finally a hole in a brick wall.

LAWSON & SONS

Brighton

During the midday lunch hour two men jumped from an automobile this week, smashed the window in the store of Lawson & Sons, jewelers of Brighton-on-Sea, and got away with $7,500 worth of rings. There were a lot of holiday makers on the spot at the time, and a taxi-cab rank with several chauffeurs is in the street opposite the jewelry store. All were too astonished at the quickness of the coup to try to stop the thieves. Motor lorries containing Scotland Yard detectives and police cars equipped with wireless are scouring the metropolis, the abandoned car used by the thieves being found at Chelsea, southwest London, 50 miles from Brighton. A mallet was used to smash the jewelry shop window, 30 rings being missing.

FIDEL FUCHTER

15, Stone Street, Maidstone

BANKRUPTCIES

FUCHTER, Fidel, Watchmaker and Jeweler, 15, Stone-street, Maidstone. In this small failure the public examination was held on January 18th at the Sessions House, Maidstone. Replying to the Official Receiver, debtor said he had carried on business at the same house in Stone-street since the year 1868. His wife had also kept since 1880 a registry office for servants, and was the agent for dye works. But for the pecuniary assistance he received from his wife he would have been compelled to give up long ago. He had been struggling for many years, but he did not stop before, because he kept hoping that he would have better years. Only five pounds' worth of furniture in his house belonged to himself. The other was bought by his wife out of her own earnings. His insolvency commenced as far back as 1880. In that year someone stole watches from his shop of the value of £50. Several of them belonged to customers, and he had to make good the loss. In the following year he was seriously ill with inflammation of the lungs, and after that his business continued to go down. He had a family of seven children. He kept no books, and was consequently unable to prepare a deficiency account. The bankrupt was allowed to pass.
