Datation of a Bemberg beaker ?

Post by dinio »

Hello,
I recently acquired a 10 cm high silver beaker engraved with the name Gretchen and which has 2 hallmarks on the bottom : a letter B and the figure 13.There is no maker mark.
I believe that it is a 13 löth item produced in Bemberg, but I am a bit confused with the datation.
Based on the style and on the marks, could someone confirm the origin and give a possible date ?

Thanks for the help.

Hello, Bamberg (it's Bamberg. not Bemberg - Tardy got that wrong along the way, in the 1942 edition of Tardy it was written correctly) certainly is a possibility. Another possibility is Bützow, which used a "B" very much like the "B" on Your piece. Without a maker's mark one cannot be sure. As to the date - 1860, give or take a decade, would seem appropriate, considering the style of the piece. I believe that the engraving is a later addition. Best wishes, Bahner

Hello Bahner,
Thank you for the information. I also thought that it was from the end of 19C but I was confused by this B which looked like the one for Bamberg, beginning 18C.
Sorry for the spelling of Bamberg, You made the right guess: I was using the Tardy...
Thanks again,
Dinio
