Please help - information about a Pocket watch

Post by jonut »

Hi. Hoping to get some information about my grandfather's pocket watch. I didn't know him well as he passed away in 1986. When he passed, my Nana kept it until she gave it to me in 2018 before she passed away. He was born in the UK and emigrated to Australia when he was about 14 or so. Nana said he bought it from an antique watch shop in Hong Kong many years before the end of British rule (i think maybe they went there in the early 70's)

I have done a little research myself. There appears to be a 1913 date mark on it (S) and the London Assay Office stamp (Leo). It is upside down so i believe it was imported pre-1950. I cannot find any reference online to the sponsors mark which is an SA in a diamond shape. There is a well displayed series on numbers (like a serial number) and also a P stamped below the sponsor's mark. I thought this might be the makers mark but I don't know.
I couldn't get a clear enough photo, but, in addition to the main serial number, there are very feint groups of numbers engraved in multiple places around it. I am thinking this MIGHT have been done by successive owners over time. But I can't make out any real detail.

Anyway, any help would be appreciated. Like i said, I don't know much about my grandfather so I feel like this might be an opportunity to learn more about him. It was difficult to get information about him from anyone.

Thank you in advance!

J

Hi and welcome to the forum. As you have already identified, the hallmark is a London import mark for the assay year 1913/14. The importer's mark is that of the rather unimaginatively named Selling Agency. This was part of Dimier Brothers of Cannon Street, London EC, a well known watch importing company. This SA mark was registered by the London Assay Office in 1907 and re-registered in 1914.

Thank you Phil! Any idea who may have made the watch? Where it might have come from?
