The mark of John Mathew

Post by juantotree »

Hi

I have this Hanoverian Pattern spoon dated to 1715. To me the makers mark seems like a pretty good match to Grimwade 1985 which is noted as the mark of John Mathew.

I am struggling to find anything on the net or in any of my other resources that mentions John Mathew. Has anybody seen any work by this maker, or does anybody feel I may have mis-identified the maker altogether? Any thoughts are most welcome.

Martin

Hi Martin,

Just a small, but maybe important, piece of information, Grimwade records the name as MATHEW, but Heal records it as MATTHEW.

Thanks Trev, unfortunately I don't seem to be having much luck with either spelling in tracking down any of his work, or indeed much info other than a reference to his will.
