Antique Tureen (Food Warmer)

Post by Angela.Buchan »

Hi
I believe this is silver plated. Thought maybe it was silver with gold plating but most online are not.The owner scrubbed off the plating.
The stamp appears Chinese and the rooster appears to be from France.I know it's absolutely antique. The owners believe it could date closer to 150 years old in accordance to family ownership. There are a couple hallmarks and I can't find any of them online. It looks like the bottom horizontal line in the window looking hallmark is an arrow when using a loop.
The Hallmark the far right appears to be a clover or cross.
Thanks a bunch.

I don't think the rooster has anything to do with France. It's stands on a torse (heraldic term for a twisted fabric roll) so it's a crest. Crests were used by British families who were granted coat of arms so if you know the name of the original owner's family it might be possible to find it in Fairbairn's Book of Crests. Likely there were several families who have used rooster as their crest.

The maker appears to be T.J. & N. Creswick of Sheffield.
