Help needed

Post by amena »

Hello everyone
I am interested in this palmatoria that attracts me.
Image
However I do not recognize the marks and I can not even understand which country or area they are from.
Could they be fantasy marks?
Any help will be precious
Thanks

" The guild in Schaffhausen (canton Schaffhausen) had a successive line of wardens who served in an unbroken line from 1577 until the mid-1850s. The last warden of the Schaffhausen guild would eventually become synonymous with Swiss silver: Johann Jakob Jezler (1796-1868; Master 1822)."

I can't find any Warden's Mark from 1620, but it is possible that the hallmark on your spoon is a predecessor to the Jezler hallmark, so you might have a piece of authentic Swiss silver from 1620, is that possible?

Of course, when you see a "pin-prick" or "pointillist" date and initials inscribed on a spoon, you would have to think about Denmark as well, so I can't rule that out either, but I was immediately struck by the similarity between your hallmark and the hallmark seen on Jezler (who was the last warden of the Schaffhausen guild, so is it possible that the hallmark on your spoon has something to do with the Schaffhausen guild circa 1620....? )

I'm thinking about Switzerland and Denmark right now, hope that helps, hope it isn't a wild goose chase

The similarity might be a coincidence, so we might have to follow the "pin-prick" date and initials tradition back to 17th century Denmark and check there.

Thanks Aguest for your considerations
I am really not very knowledgeable about Swiss or Danish silver, let alone if it is from the 17th century.
I also think we should look in Northern Europe.
I seem to see a K with four dots on the sides, which makes it unlikely that it's a Romance-speaking country.
There is, however, something strange in the decoration of the handle:

the sumptuous crown with lion and plumes is above pin-pricked initials, off-center, to boot.
I can't give a reason, even less if, as the description of the lot states, it's a palmatoria, therefore used by a high prelate

::::: Possibly Norway, with two different marks of this general style, the similarity to the Swiss mark is probably coincidental, and every time I've ever seen a pin-prick initial mark it almost always leads back to Scandinavia. :::::::

::::::::::: I was thinking about where I had seen other "pin-prick" initials and "pin-prick" dates and I thought I remembered that I had seen it in Baltic Silver and this has been seen on 18th century Baltic Silver, not sure about 17th century Baltic Silver, however :::::::::::::::::: I looked at the Baltic Silver threads and did find examples of that "pin-prick" style. :::::::::
