Canadian Naval Services: Silver, Silverplate, History

Post by Traintime »

An open-ended string to investigate silver wares related to the naval services of Canada from their formation until modern age. Emphasis upon dining wares, presentation services, and silver awards but open to add images to document the periods of activity and the associated insignias, ships, uniformed personnel and anything else that may reasonably add to the knowledge of marked historical objects made with silver or gold. Canada's services have changed their name over time which makes it important to pay attention to the fine details. H.M.C.S. is a reference to His Majesty's Canadian Ship, or Her, as may need to be adjusted with the reign.

Crests of the "Canadian Royal Navy" first used in 1944 when 9 Maple Leaves represented the Provinces, and then later altered to accomodate 10 Maples. The first useage employed the Tudor Crown and was reportedly not used after circa 1952:

Sample ware: Silverplate Creamer #513 bearing the 9 Maple logo of the Royal Candian Navy and manufactured by the Ontario based firm of Wm. A. Rogers (by then a subsidiary of Oneida) in "STURDY-HOTEL-PLATE" Silver Soldered for institutional or commerical supply. It is not yet known whether these wears saw employment in sea services aas documentation is quite lacking and items are few to suface. Item is tentatively dated 1944-52 based on information found about the crest. Presumably made in the Canadian factory even though this boxed name has been attributed only to the American side so far and there is no reference to "Canada" as commonly found on items produced at that location.

Move over boys! The ladies were joining the show too, on both land and sea. W.R.C.N.S. was the Womens Royal Canadian Naval Service of WWII, a revival of the earlier "Wrens".

The old gent in the photos is wearing the 10 Maple crest, but was in service in 1944 as shown. At the time of this shot about a year or so back, he was 99 years old and expected to be 100 for the planned re-union of any veterans who could be found as seen in the ad at that time. Obviously wearing the patch of a Chief Petty Officer(C.P.O.).
