18k gold cuff links (Birmingham?)

Post by Regular5446 »

Hi all,

Trying to figure out what this maker's mark is on these 18 karat cuff links - I am 99% certain it says: "A.H & Co" with a bar under the "o".

I am fairly certain these were assayed at Birmingham but the date letter "W" is throwing me for a loop. I think could be 1940's - 1950's ish? These are 18 karat and were owned by my grandfather. His wife was born in England and migrated to Canada during WW2 so it's possible these were a gift from her to him. Gramps was born in Canada and lived there all his life.

Any ideas on age or make for these cuff links? The links and the chain are all assayed and stamped 18k.

Hi and welcome to the forum

I think that we are looking here at a lower case "w" date letter for the assay year 1921/22. AH&Co is not known to me and doesn't appear in any of my references.

Appreciate the insight! I also could not find anything about this maker's mark. Is it safe to say these were assayed at Birmingham though? The anchor symbol seems fairly clear although quite worn down.

The scratched numbers and letters on the back of one of them are odd. It looks like it says "97/32" (??) and then some word or letters underneath it. No idea what this could mean. Me and a jeweler I know were staring at it under her microscope but couldn't figure out the scratched letters for sure.

I should have said that I agree with your assessment that it is a Birmingham mark. Scratched marks of this sort are often thought to be inventory marks of some sort.

Ah, that makes a lot of sense. Never considered that. I'd love to be able to track down what the heck AH & Co is though... bah
