Marks on Dupont Classique Pens

Post by RichT8496 »

Hi All,

I have 2x Dupont Classique Vermeil Ballpoint pens I would like to know more about. So far I am finding the process fascinating but frustrating!

So I know they are both from after 1973 as these pens were the result of a commission from Jackie Kennedy in 1973.

PEN 1: 925 silver vermeil with a green inlay on the clip. Likely to be from around 1973-75 it has 2 very similar (the same?) marks which are men looking to the left with V symbol on the neck. I don't know why there are 2 of the same mark but it doesn't seem to match any of the Minervas or Mercury or Hermes symbols I have seen. Any ideas what these are? Here from different angles and lights

PEN 2: same pen in 925 silver vermeil with a black inlay on the clip. Probably from around 1980. This one has, again 2 identical symbols but this time the French crab symbol which I understand means >800 silver. But again, I don't know why there are 2 of them. This pen also has an extra symbol which looks like a 4 petalled flower. This one has drawn a complete blank and I have no idea what it is.

Please can you help?
Many thanks

Hope it's ok to bump again?
Hi All. I have had lots of conversations now with Dupont themselves and they say they can't tell me anything about the pens as they don't hold such records. That was my last hope. I'm really hoping someone here can give insight?

The Mercury head hallmark in an oval frame was used between 1879 and 1994 to mark items intended for export, and for which the hallmarking duties had been refunded.
The crab hallmark was employed to mark small silver items between 1838 and 1984. The assay office mark V can be distinguished on the marks, this indicates the pens were marked at the Annemasse office, situated in Savoy. This assay office was opened in 1967 and closed in 2005.
The marks can thus be dated to between 1967 and 1984.

The reason there are two hallmarks each time is that there are two sections in silver for each pen, but only one can be easily hallmarked. The double mark shows that two items that make up a whole were presented to the assay office and checked for title.
