Help with Dutch Fork type and date

Post by RPW62 »

Image

I am not even close to being an expert on silver but have some internet searching ability. I haven’t come across a set with these animal hooves in the three years of searching.
They bare the hallmark of a sword. Through further analysis with my sons Intel 200x microscope I found most of the forks have an additional mark all in the same spot at the end of the twist. I figure it must be the date stamp but was only able to view a small image. The other interesting mark on one sword handle seemed to be a skull and maybe cross bones of some sort.
Thanks

The sword hallmark was used on small silver items from 1814 - 1906. Items that are marked with a sword usually don't have date marks and are marked only with the sword and a makers mark. So the additional mark should be the makers mark, but the pictures are not clear enough for me to make anything of it.

The resemblance of a skull and bones in one of the sword handles it probably just a coincedance.

I forgot to mention, this design is not uncommon for dutch silver items like teaspoons, cocktail forks etc.
The 'buck hoof' design was popular around 1900 - 1920, and because of the old sword hallmark taht wasn't used anymore after 1906 I think your cocktail forks are from around 1900.

Thank you truly, I was amazed with the difference in sword stamps and thought the same with the skull.

I figure the stamp I am finding at the end of the twist would possibly be from the device used to grasp and twist the implement.

Thank you again
