Makers mark on cream jug

Post by mogxelissa »

I have a fairly decent sized cream jug, hallmarks for London 1861. However I'm struggling to identify the maker. The mark WH looks similar to that of William Hunter, however this site puts him at 1886.
I haven't been able to find this mark in any of my reference books (Jacksons, Korman)
Thank you,
Clare

Hello Clare,
Welcome to the forum.
The mark shown on the site's London index for William Hunter was actually registered in 1884 but there had previously been the same marks registered under that name from much earlier so you had the right man for the jug.

Thanks Mike,
I did wonder if that was the case, the mark just looked too similar to that of William Hunter.
Thanks again,
Clare
