The Goldsmiths of Bath

Arthur Grimwade in his London Goldsmiths 1697-1837 Their Marks & Lives records a total of 19 silversmiths working in the fashionable spa town of Bath, whose names are entered at the London Assay Office. There were of course many more working in the silver trade in that town, and hopefully this topic will record some more details of those involved.

Grimwade recorded the following names:

William Basnett
James Bottle
William Bottle
Lionel Bretton
James Burden
John Ford
Thomas Graham
Thomas Harris
Thomas Howell
Peter Merrett
Thomas Merrifield
Thomas Mitchell
John Townsend
William Townsend
James Welshman
John Williams
Jacob Willis
Jeremiah Willsher
Thomas Wynne

Thomas Townsend**---Silversmith---Courier & Evening Gazette---21st December 1795 (see below for details of John Townsend)

*Denotes recorded by Grimwade
** Mentioned in Grimwade's biography of William Townsend
***Denotes recorded by Baillie

A James Brinklow, Watchmaker, is recorded as working in Jamaica in 1789, perhaps to indentified as the same watchmaker in the above listing.

The bankruptcy notice of Thomas Townsend reads: Thomas Townsend of the City of Bath, Silversmith, and John Townsend, of Bathwick, victualler and builder, to surrender Jan. 5,6, and 30, at eleven, at the Argyle Coffee House, Bathwick. Attorney, Mr Taylor, New King Street, Bath. The John Townsend mentioned is most likely to be one of the same John Townsend recorded by Grimwade (p.716).

The above death notice that stated: 'At Widcomb, Mr B. Axford, many years a jeweller at Bath'. is likely to relate to Benjamin Axford, or perhaps a son. Benjamin Axford was a noted Bath Jeweller and Goldsmith, born in 1726, he was apprenticed to Peter Gouillet around the year 1740. Benjamin Axford was in business on his own account in Bath by 1748 and likely married to his wife, Anne, at that time, as the Bath Abbey registers record the birth of twelve children to the couple in the years between 1749 and 1766.

Benjamin Axford is known to have had at least one apprentice indentured to him, Samuel Dunn in 1764.

Peter Gouillet left Bath for London in c.1744, taking his apprentice, Benjamin Axford with him. Heal records Peter Gouillet at the 'Crown & Pearl' at Leicester Fields, London in 1744. Axford returned to Bath on completion of his term.

Peter Gouillet is likely to be the 'Mr Goulet', noted in this advertisement that appeared in the London Evening Post on the 28th November 1738

Image

Peter Gouillet was perhaps of Huguenot descent and is likely to be identified with the jeweller, Charles Gouillet, who was also recorded as working in Leicester Fields in the 1770's by Heal.

On the 23rd February 1933, an exhibition entitled 'The British Theatrical Loan Exhibition' was held at Dudley House, Park Lane. One of the exhibits was a bill issued by the Bath jeweller and goldsmith, William Evill, the bill, dated 1771, was made out to the playwright and poet Richard Sheridan, it stated:

R B Sheridan

June 10. To 1 Neat Hair Locket.
.......... To 1 Fancy Ring.
.......... To Setting a Picture in a Case.

The hair and the picture were believed to be of the actress Elizabeth Linley to whom he was to marry two years later.

Further detail of Richard Sheridan will be found at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Brinsley_Sheridan" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and of Elizabeth Linley at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Ann_Linley" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The London Gazette of 16th March 1841 gives a notice of a disolved partnership of Fasana (senior) and Stafford.

Both names appear in Gye's Bath Directory of 1819, Fasana (Jeweller and Stationer) of 35, Milsom Street and T. Stafford (Goldsmith and Jeweller) of 14, Bond Street. A Thomas Stafford (Jeweller) was noted as being bankrupt in 1821.

This mark, noted on a tablespoon, was entered at Goldsmiths Hall on the 29th June 1789. The partnership appears to have been over by 1792 when they both entered separate marks at London with Graham remaining in Bath and Willis departing to Frome in Somerset.

JOHN WRIGHT & Co.

John Wright who is recorded in the above 1848 directory, entered marks at the London Assay Office. He was listed as a Silversmith, Jeweller, and Perfumer of 14, Abbey Churchyard and 15, Cheap Street, Bath in 1841, and by 1845 he had removed to the noted premises at 16, Milsom Street, Bath.

By 1864 the business was styled Wright & Son, and still located at the Milsom Street address.

John Wright's private residence was noted as Bloomfield House, Bath, in November 1849.

EDWIN J. VOKES

16, Milsom Street, and 31, Southgate Street, Bath

Image
Edwin J. Vokes - Bath - 1885

The history of Edwin Vokes's firm can be traced back to Zephanian Bullock of Widcombe, Bath, to c.1740. Thomas Bullock took over from his father, Zephanian, in 1765, and ran the business until 1795 when he handed it over to his son, William, who died in 1846. The firm then passed to William Bullock's nephew, William Vokes, he died in 1870, aged 59 years and the business passed to Edwin.

JAMES STAMP

It would appear that James Stamp (Grimwade p.669) was perhaps resident at Bath at the time of his death. The following notice appeared in Deaths column in 'The Gentleman's Magazine':

Deaths - 11th April 1780

At Bath, Mr James Stamp, Silversmith at Cheapside, and a Common-Councilman of Cheap Ward.
