Matthew Linwood was born in 1754, he served his apprenticeship under Joseph Hunt, who is described in directories as a 'Gilt Toy, Plated Military and Crest Button Maker'. Linwood was one of the Guardians of the Birmingham Assay Office in 1811. He was married to Frances Giles. He died in 1826.

Matthew Linwood had one son, also called Mattew, as most of the male Linwoods were. He is likely to have spent some time in partnership with his father, as from 1813, but later moved to London, where he opened a Jeweller's shop in Fleet Street. He was born in 1783, and died in 1847, he was burried in the churchyard of St. Mary's, Haggerston, Shoreditch.
