Help With Spoon Marks

Post by Borkspoon »

See attached photo.
Engraving on back of the spoon suggests it is 1849 or older.
Any ideas? Thanks for your time and interest.

Hello Borkspoon,

For me looks like German silver assayed in KIEL in the 18th century.

Hope this helps.

Best Regards

I dont know about the triancle never seen it before.
But the silver smith - for mee it looks like IENSEN mark nr 2091 in "Danske sølv mærker" #2 page 33.

Ole Christian Jensen born 1809 in Hillerød (north of Copenhagen) Sitisenship on the 1st of September 1835 - He lives in Slotsholmsgade (gade = street) and in Mørkegade. The last the time that something is written regarding him is in 1870.

Now I cannot say that this spoon is made by him. But it looks like a spoon from that period. And I am sure that it is mark 2091 or at leats it look (identical) like that one.

Of cause the triancle ??

Then again - I think that I have seen something like that 3-angel perhaps my memory leeds me to something.

Kiel is correct. The triangular city mark is a "nesselblatt": heraldic device depicting a stylized nettle leaf, but looking like a serrated triangle. Several German cities in Schleswig-Holstein used this mark (it is the symbol of the old Duchy of Holstein), but here it is definitely Kiel, because "IENSEN" is the mark of Kiel silversmith Matthias Petersen Jensen: born 1801, master 1835, died 1868.

Hope this helps!
