Austrian lemonade spoon Diana 1867-1922

Post by silverfan »

Hi all,
the 19 cm lemonade spoon is marked with Diana A for Vienna, 3 for 800 fineness and a leaf ? as, I think, the maker's mark. Does anybody know the maker? Any information welcome.

Hi Silverfan,

I believe that is the mark of Vincenz Carl Dub. They had a large flatware manufactory in Vienna.

Hi Trevor,
thank you very much. It is Dub. I could verify the information in the internet.

Linguistic curiosity. It`s oak leaf as far as I can see; the meaning of ``dub`` in both Czech and Slovak language is ``oak``. So, the silversmith used oak leaf as his mark. There were dozens of silversmiths in Vienna at the time from all parts of Austria-Hungary Empire, many of them were not ethnic Germans.

Yes, the mark is an oak leaf and acorn.

Vincenz Carl Dub was born in 1852, he took over the business of his father, Thomas Dub (b.22-12-1811-d.19-3-1889), that was founded in 1838, in 1889 following the death of his father. Vincenz Carl Dub's daughter married Alexander Sturm (b.6-5-1851-d.28-9-1915). Vincenz Carl Dub died on the 15th March 1922.

Added info...Attached thread indicates V.C. Dub firm survived beyond his 1922 death, using Toucan marks (1922-on) and oak leaf, right through to 1924: http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic ... oak#p24449

I have a Tiffany Table Lighter which has printed "Made In France" on the bottom and on the side it reads "Plaque Or" which is "Gold Plated" in French and the maker's mark is "[M (oak leaf symbol) Q]" and the maker is Marcel Quercia; The Italian word for "Oak Tree," and I also believe it is the Latin Genus name for the Oak Tree, is "Quercia," so I just thought I would add to the Oak Leaf Hallmark discussion :::
