Walter Mutz, treasurer of Chelsea Clock Co., was elected president of the Boston Jewelers Club at a meeting Nov. 4. Elliot Gordon, president of Towle Silversmiths, is a new director of the Club. Other officers remain unchanged.

Harry Hillman, of the Towle Mfg Co., left last week for his territory through the Middle West, while O. F. Samuelson left for the Coast and F. J. Spellman, for the South. All will be away for sometime.

Arthur L. Fuller, Chicago manager for the Towle Mfg. Co., and Mrs. Fuller, left on Saturday for California. Mr. Fuller will remain there for about seven weeks combining business with pleasure, and Mrs. Fuller will stay for about three months visiting with friends.

W. A. Kinsman, president and general manager, and C. S. Pendill, vice-president and sales manager for the Towle Mfg. Co., spent several days of the past week in Chicago conducting a sales meeting. All representatives traveling out of the Chicago office were on hand.

John S. O’Connell, sales manager, and Charles Withers, assistant treasurer, went to Chicago last month to attend the sales conference at the Chicago office of the Towle Mfg. Co. All of the salesmen traveling out of the Chicago office were in attendance and are very optimistic of exceeding the business of 1940, which was the largest in the history of the Chicago office. Shortly after the conference, Arthur L. Fuller, Chicago manager, and his family, left for a six weeks’ sojourn in Florida.

“Mr. Towle” Retires After Forty-Six Years in Industry
John O’Connell, vice-president since 1939 of Towle Manufacturing Co., Newburyport, Mass., has retired.
O’Connell, known as “Mr. Towle” to his many industry friends, joined the firm in 1911 as an office boy. In 1936 he was appointed sales manager, and in 1939 he achieved his recent position.
He was largely responsible in 1938 for the national launching of Towle’s “Place Setting for Sterling” program, which has since been generally adopted by the industry.

Stanley J. Driscoll, who has been a member of the sales force for the Towle Silversmiths, Newburyport, Mass., since 1945, has been appointed assistant sales manager in charge of the western division. Clifford R. Marshall will replace him in the southern territory.
During his 11 years with Towle, Mr. Driscoll has covered the southern and Cincinnati territories. Mr. Marshall has been on the sales force for two years covering upstate England and upstate New York.

A. K. MacMaster, of the Chicago office of the Towle Mfg. Co., returned last week from a short business trip to Minneapolis and St. Paul. Mr. MacMaster covered this territory for C. A. Bartling, the northwest representative, who has been unable to complete his trip on account of the serious illness of his wife, who is at the Evanston Hotel.

C. R. McLean has joined the Towle Manufacturing Co. of Newburyport, Mass., as manager of merchandising for Towle Sterling and Contempra House, a division of Towle. McLean comes to Towle following two years as manager of the special products division of the Hoover Co., of Ohio, where he developed the distribution and sale of a line of electric housewares. For 12 years prior to that, he was with the General Electric Co. in its small appliance division.

An exhibition, The Odd and the Elegant in Silver, has opened in the gallery of the Towle Silversmiths, Newburyport, Mass. The exhibition will continue through September of this year. This will enable tourists and student groups to see it. The exhibition is complemented by a presentation of the story of silver, going back 5000 years, told on panel backgrounds in the Gallery.
