WALLINGFORD, Conn.— R. Wallace & Sons Mfg. Co. announced last month that with the idea of carrying out its fair trade policies it has decided to have three sales managers across the country, whose duty it will be to work closely with the firm’s salesmen and customers in doing a better selling and merchandising job. Each sales manager will be responsible for company policies in his division as well as sales.

Inspired by the matchless wood carving of Antonio Stradivari, the new pattern presentation by R. Wallace & Sons Mfg. Co., Inc., is named in honor of the celebrated violin maker, whose death occurred just 200 years ago, in 1737. Full of grace and elegance, it has the beauty and distinctiveness of hand undercutting, in machine production. Promotion will include full page advertisements in six or more leading national magazines, a painting by Oren Ross Waggener for jewelers windows and stores and handsome display accessories. An attractive brochure entitled "An Inspired Masterpiece" describes the Stradivarius pattern.

Problem: Find the Split Pea

In the midst of research on the life and times of Sir Christopher Wren and Grinling Gibbons, his associate and master carver, R. Wallace & Sons Mfg. Co., Wallingford, Conn., discovered that Grinling Gibbons was fond of introducing among his carvings of fruits, flowers, birds, vegetables, etc., a split pea, as a kind of signature proving the work to be his. The decoration on the spoons in the silversmiths’ Sir Christopher pattern has the floral motif, on the forks is the fruit motif, and on the knives are both flowers and fruit. The company picked one piece of flatware and among the ornamentation on that piece placed a split pea, which cannot be seen easily with the naked eye but is clearly discernible under a magnifying glass or jeweler’s loupe.

“The Wallace,” house organ of the R. Wallace & Son Mfg. Co. Wallingford, Conn., has been increased in size beginning with the April issue. It was formerly 4½ x 6 inches, and now is the regular standard magazine size. “A Little Magazine with a Silver Lining” is its publication slogan. It contains articles on the detail of the manufacture of Wallace silver, with pages in half-tones showing a number of their special and standard pieces. From time to time articles will be printed on window displays and knotty advertising problems. Altogether it is an exceptionally interesting and instructive publication.
