Lovely Birmingham chatelaine (glass case I think). Can't be sure of second letter in maker's mark. Can anyone shed some light. These are the best pics available unfortunately...thanks in advance.

Hi,

Going by the shapes of the shields it would appear to be 1901, is the mark between the makers mark and the Birmingham anchor a tally mark?

Tally Mark?

I don't have the piece in my possession so can't tell you if this a tally mark or not. If it's a 20th century item would there be a tally mark? I thought these marks were only affixed back in the "olden days". Thanks for your help.

Hi John,

Some firms, even today use them on handmade items. If it is 1901 then a tally mark would be of no surprise at all.
